DDR4 RAM Speed

I bought parts for a new PC yesterday. The Corsair Vengence LPX 2 x 8GB RAM was marked as 3000 MHz on the box. But in the BIOS, they are indicated as 2166 MHz. Anyone here can help me to clarify why the actual speed is lower than that marked on the box? Thanks in advance.

Depending on your motherboard, you have to either manually set the RAM speed, or enable the RAM's XMP profile which indicates 3000Mhz

need to set xmp profile, for ryzen may not have 3000. then u set lower.

amd: enable xmp profile in bios
intel: xmp should be an option if you have a z370 mobo. otherwise... you might need to manually set memory speed to 2666 along with the timings

that's the standard default speed for ddr4.

how would the motherboard know what ram you're using and what its' specs are

how would the ram manufacturer know what motherboard you're using and its config/features

that's how it boots, by using the default industry settings

when you enable xmp/amp, you're telling the bios to read an info chip on the ram which contains the settings for that ram. or you can brute force by setting its speed/timings yourself, which is how overclocking works.

Under OC in BIOS, I can set max speed of 2666 only.

you using a intel non-K processor with a H or B series mobo? then the max speed is only 2666mhz.

my 3000mhz ram also only run at 2666mhz. using i5 8400 with H370 mobo.

Oh... means have to get Z370 intel chipset motherboards to be able to use more than 2666mhz ram speeds?

I noticed more and more games these days do benefit also from higher CPU and Ram speeds already. In the past, these factors didn't matter as much as the GPU solely

Difference is just a few percentage points for RAM speed. Just avoid anything slower than 2666 MHz.
