Hey guys,

A friend has a teenage son who's deaf in 1 ear. She asked me what will happen to him for NS but I wasn't sure so thought of checking with anyone here who may have relevant knowledge so I can inform her:

1. Will her son have to perform NS at all?

2. If yes, what vocation and PES status is he looking at?

3. Regarding BAHA (or any other hearing aid), is it better to install it Before, During or After NS?

TIA

Thank you.

Anyone else with experience relating to friends/relatives/themselves to share would be very much appreciated.
TIA

I see. Thanks for sharing. That rules out combat vocations. The boy may not be happy, but his mom should be :)

He's only 15 yrs old. But his mom is curious. It also helps to mentally prepare the boy in case he's looking forward to any particular vocation.

Yup. We hope to know more from those with similar condition prior to enlistment.

Whenever possible, hard facts would be preferable to assumptions.

The condition is straightforward and not that rare. Just hoping more can share their experiences. Otherwise no issues.

1. Will her son have to perform NS at all? (Yes, still have to serve)

2. If yes, what vocation and PES status is he looking at? (I have hearing difficulty on 1 side of the ear, but still given a PES A, Full combat vacation)

If do during NS time, not sure if the cost will be borne by the gov?

The very fact that you are seeking answers here you are already assuming and is no longer hard facts. Don’t kid yourself.

If it’s so straight forward and not rare go ask the doctor.

I see. Thanks so much for sharing.

regarding cost borne by govt, I think only possible if MO send you for it. Like a friend of mine who was sent for 'leg lengthening' operation during NS to correct his gait... and the govt paid for it!

the PES status will be determined by the severity of the hearing loss, and the cause of it etc. for example, reversible, or mild hearing impairment may not necessarily affect deployment.

even though the govt may bear the cost of medical treatment if arranged by the saf MO, the parents should get the boy's ears checked out thoroughly before enlistment. get an ENT specialist's recommendations and report, and be prepared to forward to SAF when the time comes.

sometimes, sorting out medical issues too late can actually delay enlistment date, and subsequently ORD and your educational and career plans.
