I a just wondering if this 2nd resurrection of VR is just another marketing gimmick and death of VR is just a matter of time.

There was so much hype during the initial launch of VR and computers that could support it. Many games and apps were released. It seems to have so much potential (in line with Pascal and Polaris launch as VR GPU).

We are coming close to a year later and its pretty quiet.....

SG's vive website is still showing that Arkham VR that was release back in Oct 2016. News that Rift not selling that well and adoption is rather low (in steam survey).

On the bright side, more pple are investing in playstation VR gear.

is still wrong market direction by majority of the companies. many are looking long term to lock consumers in for $$$, and harms business decisions.

oculus/facebook tried to make it a premium media consumption ecosystem thing.

valve go opposite direction tried to make it full immersion with bells and whistle

microsoft and google tried to make it a lifestyle/productivity 24/7 thing

when ppl just want a damn headset that you put on and play and put off when you don't.

psvr most successful (>1 mil units) in that direction, but restricted to ps owners.

china will be the one to push vr successfully with their cheaper, better quality, yet not too fanciful sets.

Pimax 4k now selling for USD300 on Gearbest this week with e-mail link.

Pimax 8k with 4k VR PRAWN maybe can save this industry.

One thing is for sure. The VR is not catered for people that wear glasses. :(

So that group of people can forget about the VR altogether.

One more group of people that will never enjoy the VR experience will be motion-sickness ones.

I do feel it's a fad just like 3D TV. Moreover, the cost of trying VR is quite prohibitive for most.
I believe it will not take off because,
1) Cost
2) Difficulties with setup
3) Lack of supporting titles
4) Too many players in the market, but no dominant standards. All the players are trying to take it in their own direction
5) I also think the physical space required for VR could hinder the adoption. You don't want to hurt yourself hitting something when you are in VR world.

Got people go to the VR arcade in Marina Square or not ah

believe it or not, i 'contributed' to one of the VR headset when i sold my Vive few months ago.

I feel that the idea is really good but the implementation not so. I would cite 2 key reasons why i sold it;

1. Cables. Despite the best cable management it's still a set of thick cables following you around. And when kids playing you ALWAYS have to watch after their movement or risk them banging the controllers against the wall/cupboard or worse your Monitor, or get engangled cos they are so engrossed.

2. Weight and comfort level. At least for me, the weight creates fatigue for me pretty quickly, not to mention the sweat you generate in our climate (just note past 2 days weather here).

I do enjoy games like Project Cars, fruit ninja and some roller coaster games but end of the day too much hassle due to the above.

Singapore can buy Vive or oculus meh? Importing damn ex leh. If they sell and offer support here, I would have bought already. VR is definitely not 3d. It's so much bigger than that. Virtual reality/augmented reality can really redefine how work is done or how we experience media consumption. Just that now is still early adopter phase and the tech haven't reach mass accessibility yet.

Doubt it will go mainstream and become some sort of centrepiece for gaming because as of now it's

.Expensive
.Requires an equally expensive+++ computer
.Bulky and heavy, people that dislike even wearing headphones for gaming will skip this
.Cables are annoying as hell
.Anyone with motion sickness and or history of epilepsy will totally avoid this

VR will die like 3D TV/Video

AR will rise

People will not simply buy a VR equipment that will only do one or 2 things. Plus it is not as interactive with other people other than the adult industry. AR however is going to be more mass market and affordable with existing phones.

AR is simply (hey no harm trying since it is built into my phone)

It's been available for a couple of months.
https://www.vive.com/sg/product/
I think Lazada also selling.

Over the past year, I did many VR setups with VIVE and Occulus rift.
Still considerably expensive and lack of proper content that will wow players.
Require a relatively big space to place in comfort.
Some ppl lack psychomotor and movement/location awareness and they can't differentiate their base/start point as well.(Can't think of the right word to describe)
After playing for some time, they are totally engrossed in the VR surroundings.
(Most of the time, they'll pull an I/O cable or get entangled, kick a table/chair and/or run out of frame detection.)
And like koroshiya8 mentioned, you have to be relatively "fit/conditioned" to play for long hours.(Game dependent)
Even so, you will be irritated after playing for a period of time due to perspiration.@@
