I am a student in NTU and I am required to complete my 10 weeks compulsory internship from 14 May to 20 July next year. However, i want to apply for the 3 weeks overseas study programme after the internship period. Application is open only in January but i will most likely get in as it is fee paying.

After that, school will begin. I was wondering if i get called up for ICT, will i be able to defer?

If you get called up for reservist, you can defer by calling up the NS helpline, or by emailing the respective NS Email for your reservist vocation.

You will probably need to email them a letter of active studies, available from your uni, your sch timetable as well as your student card.

Normally, MINDEF will put u under non active list for about 8 years after ORD so that you may be allowed to complete your tietary studies and not disrupting you.

Hence, that is why you will see a lot of the NSMEN normally get called up at around the age of 28-30 for their first ICT. But of course, there are exceptions,

For my case, my old unit pull me back for 3 weeks ICT after my ORD for a bloody exercise cos my CO promoted to head of branch and pull me in to help. After that, I was removed from active NSMEN for 8 years before coming to serve my ICT IN my current NS Unit

It may be 8 years for you, but that's not an official thing. Different NSmen get called back at different period after ORD, depending on several factors. There have been a lot of known cases of NSmen completing their ORNS cycles around age 30 (JC students who ORD around age 20 and start their ORNS cycles early, for example).

IHL NSmen can, will, and have been called back during their vacation.

hey bro can tell me how to defer ns? what did u do?? who to call?

There are specific reasons why a person can defer his reservist, the most common one is for studies.

To defer for studies, you will need to call up the respective Reservist Unit you have been assigned to and email them your Uni/Poly schedule, student card and a letter of active studies (which you can get by emailing your schools student services).

You can also defer your reservist if you get called up for it after receiving a job offer, and are new to the job (some employers are really nice and will let you go, most, however, want to train you up).

Other reasons for deferment of reservist are that you are on your honeymoon, or your wife is in her third trimester and is about to give birth.

For the above reasons, you will have to either call up the NS helpline, or call your respective Reservist Unit

The last reason would be that you found a job prospect overseas, and that would require you to apply for an exit permit.

If there are any other reasons I missed out, feel free to point them out!

Of course, you will be released from you reservist duties once you renounce you Singapore Citizenship. This last course of action will of course allow you to never serve reservist.....
