Delidding for 7700k

Does anyone still provide delidding service here? I remember Spyboy48 used to do it.

After remove lid and change TIM, didn't put any black silicon back or what, just directly put back heatsink and install cpu block back on TOP, for me I find the pressure from the cpu block enough to hold it Liao no point to seal it back (future want to change TIM also easier)

Since we are on the topic of delidding, do you guys relid it back or just let it 'float'?

Delidded my 7700K myself with a razor blade. I also let the CPU IHS 'float' rather than attach it permanently.

so is there any huge differences between a delid "float" mode or delid and relid provide better temp and performances? or basically its about the same?

next if those let it float how can u assure that the cpu is holding in place and the cpu cooler and cpu is touching each other?

Wow,...I read that delid helps in reduction of 20 degrees temperature. Cases of running to 5.2ghz has been reported stable. Whether is worth the effort and risk is other factor too. :D

It makes a huge difference in temperature..i run my 7700K in a tiny itx case with no fans and cannot accomodate more than 65W TDP coolers. Others using stock 7700K@4.2Ghz on the same case as me send their cpu close to 100deg running stress tests almost instantly. For me with the delid, temps doing the same stress tests are about 85deg..and I run a 4.7GHz overclock!!

There is no real need to attach the IHS. The normal motherboard cpu socket clamps already hold the IHS firmly in place. It cannot move once the cpu is mounted. Further clamped down once you mount the heatsink which pushes the IHS down some more

P.S just a word of advice if you plan to delid. It is nowhere near a risk free process. see online for the delid fails to know what i mean. There are plenty of them. You must be mentally prepared to face the possibility of destroying a $350 processor and needing to buy another one just to save a few degrees in temperature. If you cannot afford to throw away the money spent on the cpu..my advice is not to do it

Just nice for you to better go back to AMD, Ryzen is soldered (and cheaper too). =:p

Don't worry Mac, I'm still good both with Intel and AMD. Was just mad with AMD marketing and had a bad arguments with the forumers here that sparked the go to Intel immediately on one fine Saturday (LOL) Anyway, no regrets in the purchase either. I game everyday. Not bad for an old man LOL :D I might get ryzen in near future. :D

Actually it's the same haha, just that some may find the lid move a bit. For me I actually Dap a little mx4 at the 4 corner of the heatsink (away from the middle) so there is some tension to hold both together. Works for me :D

MX4 is a low viscosity ceramic base paste. But better grade cermamic paste with higher viscosity will likely exhibit similar behaviour.
Summary
Delidding with the idea that normal TIM can be used under IHS should be dismissed as reiterated on OCN. The stock TIM is thick and "clay like", crap conductivity but its made to last for years with the high viscosity.

Dot on IHS
And Linus's dot method on bare die with flat side IHS might not be a good idea.
This could turn out to be the spread.
(Unlike convex + flat surface between heat sink and IHS)

Yup I have used CLU and have posted some pics and experience on those.

But there will still be a notable amount of people (even on OCN) out there that come to a conclusion that ceramic paste is a good stopgap that's safe and unreactive compared to LM just like I did though conventional wisdom says otherwise. ;)

I'm just putting out my record in pictures how ceramic paste hasn't worked and that there's no recourse once you delid than reaching the end state of using LM eventually.

It may/may not help someone else make a better decision and save the time, cleanups and hassle.

At the end of the day, conclusion is:


Intel need to stop putting pigeon poop on the IHS-to-die contact.



Anyway I heard the best combo is LM + Kyronaut on the 2 die spacing.
