They are talking rubbish...
I have 2 pieces of Kingston ValueRAM KVR533D2S4/1G (1GB PC2-4200 CL4 200-Pin SODIMM) in my Inspiron 9300 (self-installed) and they work perfectly fine.
But then, those are DDR2. Maybe DDR1 has compatibility issues, I dunno...

Hmm...Convergent website lists these @ $139 each...rather cheap
Hey hey! Same memory too!

I have also upgraded my RAM for 9300. Didn't use Kingston though. I got Patriot memory as their website officially shows that the particular part number will work on Dell 9300. I had good experience with Patriot in the past on my 700m, so just stick to the brand.

I am using 2 pieces of Patriot (PSD512333S) PC2700 CL2.5 512MB.

Note that on the 700m, only 1 RAM slot is easily accessible from the bottom. The other slot is under the keyboard. To change that, you have to:
- remove the hinge cover (see here, with pictures)
- remove keyboard (see here) (I didn't detach the keyboard flex cable)
- change the RAM (see here)

Don't worry, it's not difficult :)

Not show off, just stating the fact, i9300 is the king of notebooks now in SG, the only near it is the ATI X800, which sad to say isn't even available in SG shores...

I'm not using the latest firmware, just the latest hardare revision of the Geforce Go6800.

Also, the Dell guy just left, did a change of mobo cause my audio out connector is dead, got a new revision 3 mobo too.. manufactuered by GCE on Aug 27 2005.

Windows XP detected hardware changes and did quite a few installation... main changes are the firewire device, 915 bridges, PCIE bridges etc.. now al lthose got a #2 beside it.. .ugly...

buying Dell 510m seconds

hi Dell lovers..
Am new bie to Dell. Previously am having Acer Travelmate series..
one of my known person is selling his Dell 510m. but exisiting config with 510m (512 ram, 40GB HDD) is not sufficient to my professional work. if i can go for upgrade of this 510m to 1024Ram and 80GB HDD, usually this upgrade costs $500.
So usually how much the market price now for Dell510m in seconds?.
Can anybody share their experience on this...?
and if go for above upgrade, what will be performance w.r.t. existing processor config ?/.

I appriciate for u r feedback..

thanks for u r time.,

Rgds,
Prasad

For a start, you probably need to get more precise config info from the guy. "510m" is just a generic model number. When buying from Dell, he had the option of modifying the config, like CPU speed, screen resolution and type (Truelife vs normal), optical drive type (dvd writer vs not, writing speed, dual layer), battery type (6,8 or 9 cell), wifi type (a/b vs a/b/g), Bluetooth (have vs not), extended warranty, etc. So you need to know the detailed config to know what exactly you are buying. (RAM and HDD size are the easy parts to upgrade yourself.)

You should also find out when he bought the laptop, cos the battery life will definitely be much shortened (even if he rarely uses it). If it is like 2 or 3 years already, you probably need to get another battery (not sure if there is 3rd party, if not, you have to order from Dell and their delivery charge is not cheap).

Hi Lee,
thanks for quick information.
I have those information. my main confusing status is with default CPU speed, 512 Ram, 40GB, 15' monitor size, how much i can but this 510m model.?
all other spec config is default to model 510m. when he brought, he changed only two things:

1. Upgrade to 512 Ram
2. upgrade to 15i monitor.

all other options are default to model 510m.

Rgds,
prasad
