Hi

I like to check anyone of you or office bought DELL Precision 5820

I have meet with faulty batch of Precision 5820 in my office

Spending about 4 month plus trying to resolve it, from DELL tolding us is Windows Build issue , Bio Issue , My office trading application issue , but not their DELL hardware issue

DELL personnels number of visit to change n check the workstations, App and Sys log submission, Incident Video submission, Workstations hang without getting into Windows, System Hang or Freeze for simple operation not even ON our trade application, Loud Fan Noise when shutting down machine, Workstations Alarm Sound off (when powering on and without opening any of its casing), 2 unit being replacement, 1 unit motherboard graphic card and SSD hardware being replace till date

Recently one of the machine, have upgrade to SM961 NVMe M2 SSD quoting by SI vendor and DELL can resolve our issue

Our Spec is Intel Xeon W-2123 chip , 256GB SANDISK SSD , ECC 2400 16GB * 2 Ram , P1000 graphic cards , Windows 10 Pro 64 Bits

This suppose to be a middle range spec between consumer and server. We are trading firm, using it processing data , calculation and trade. Which the usage is about 10GB for RAM , CPU around 18-23%. But it cannot performance and every 2-3 issue appear

Do anyone face this similar faulty , SI vendor told us Bank and Financial Inst have order 100 over set each without any issue. so cannot be so lucky that i only bought about 8 pc

I am now quite clueless and lose , ask them to change model say cannot , lot of excuse given by them. and my management is losing patient on me with this pending case

Anyone can advise me. Thank

Since you are your firms IT, you should check hw and software logs and determine issue, not outsource problem to strangers.

So it was the Sandick SSD which was the root problem then? And which version of Windows are you running?

So you're not IT and there's no in-house IT at all?

I also can see the problem with some coy especially SME.
Just think IT is redundant, why bother to hire one headcount.
Just buy, setup and run.

A lot of issues here:

- Did you have Dell pro support?
For workstation/station usually best to opt for pro support
with up to 5 years.
However some coy drop this so to cut cost.

- Who is the vendor? Is there service contract?
From the way you wrote it seems the workstation is not
sold directly by Dell right?
If it is through a vendor, you should work with the vendor
to resolve the issue.

- Did you or did you not install the driver correctly?
Especially the NVM drivers so did you load the correct driver from Dell
website or the manufacturer.
Windows 10 can load all drivers but certain drivers like SATA
it will not update/load it.
You have to check everything is loaded properly especially since
this is a workstation/server not a desktop.

The SAS/NVME have to loaded correctly if not OS may not
load properly and worse data corruption.

This is what you get by cutting cost.
When things screw up, you start blaming.
If you have either a in house IT, you can ask the person to first
check the workstation driver is it loaded properly.

Or if you take up a service contract with vendor than ask the vendor to check the OS driver.
I know it maybe too technical than you have to pay for someone to take a look.

If you don't know where to look can ask Dell as they have many vendors doing server for them. They charge based on jobs, it is not cheap since this is a workstation/server.

Since you are trading business, I doubt you don't have $ for a IT technician to take a look.

I am the only IT personnel here, asking all the expert in DELL , but noone can give us an answer what is wrong with machine with them coming to check , extract log , exchange 2 serious machine to their office, and insist their machine do not have issue. I have 3 year of warranty on Next Business Day Support. But on the very very first case , part are not available and was delay for a week , part like Motherboard , SSD , Graphic Cards.

As our DELL 5820 is CTO (Custom to Order) , DELL outsource their technical n engineers to come n check at the system , with video capturing and capturing of logs , stress test .. but cannot identify the main root cause.

But what are the diagnosis/troubleshooting that you've done on your end?

I've yet to experience full blown enterprise level support, but I imagine ProSupport is pretty much "I need XYZ part replacement, your diagnostic tool is saying ABC" and they go "Okay, we'll dispatch a tech with XYZ part". At least that's how it worked for my laptop.

Check Event Viewer what happened to these machines.

To be brutally honest, many firms are total @sshole in IT management. They low balled and hired the cheapest available IT personnel and expect the only personnel to provide across the board support in both software, hardware, system deployment, maintenance, and repair but tied up his/her hands when critical and immediate decision needed to fix problem.

Not referring to you, seen more than enough of such firms, expect the IT personnel to be a superman but refused to offer superman pay. When hiring IT personnel, the criteria are usually Uni grad, young (not explicitly mentioned but HR will do it), good in MS office, networking and implementation of security measure etc.... The terms can be comprehensive but lack a critical requirement you cannot get from the young (fresh graduate) or less than 5 years field experiences which is practical field experiences. Well trained and experienced personnel will not take up such peanut offer, they rather do FL than to be tied down with a permanent job.

If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

One of the best post I've seen for this year :).

To add to this, I'm not sure how our government expect more people in that sector.

More than a decade ago, I already advised nephews to avoid IT as a career. The reality is that a lot of IT jobs were being outsourced to other countries.

Diagnosis, appear nothing to be wrong at all also.....nothing to troubleshoot

If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

Some coy pay their IT only $1.8k or so but do infra support which means
include server, network and etc.
Why bosses see IT as redundant, a burden to coy expenses and etc.

When things cock up or fail to meet coy expectations.
Starts to put blame on the underpaid IT staff.
They will never ever blame their decision especially cutting cost.

Not paying staff properly as well as for certain projects like
data hosting for server. Will tend to source for the cheapest tender,
omit support and any redundant option to save on $.

Staff PC due for replacement don't want to change, insist the person
to use. If staff cannot perform or meet due dates than start blaming
either IT or the staff but not the faulty hardware.

I been in such scenario, sometimes I straight tell management.
Fine if you want low cost, if it don't deliver or anything cock up.
I blame your stingy decision so don't put the blame on me.

I can only try my best but ultimately the vendor should handle it.
As you know vendor needs to be pay, they don't work for free either
am I.
