anyone has issues using the monitor?

my friend purchased this monitor, connected it via the DVI cable provided to a PC 7850, changed source to DVI, but nothing comes out, only the power saving mode signal

ur fren pc newly setup? is there any on board vga? if yes, try check if the output has been set default to use onboard vga instead of video card.

This monitor needs Male HDMI to Male DVI-D in order for it to work, am i right? HDMI is conencted to desktop/laptop, DVI-D to the monitor. Since it does not have a built-in speaker, i need to connect my speakers to the desktop?

Will there be any picture quality compromise by using a hdmi to dvi?

Both DVI and HDMI are digital, quality is about the same.

It depends on your purpose for the monitor. From what I understand the DELL Ultrasharp series like your U2312HM are using IPS panels. These are highly colour accurate therefore making them ideal for photoshop and other graphical designing applications. However I am not sure what you are refering to as AOC 23" so cant really help you.

Yup yup.. good for doing graphic designs

U2312HM being a budget model is not factory calibrated. Only the more expensive ones with PremierColor are.
You'll still need to do your own calibration (best with calibration hardware rather than "eye power") to make it suitable for graphics design
