Hi guys,

Anyone have any experienced with dell notebook warranties? Thinking of getting one and wondering if the standard coverage- basic support covers diagnosis, parts and labor for manufacturing defects (all non-accidental damage) and if i need to bring the laptop to technician

Dell's warranty is onsite as there's no service centre.

My 3 encounters with them through the years have been below standard to average, as compared alongside Lenovo's onsite service and of course the Apple Genius Bar. Right at the start, the hardest part is in proving to the engineers that you have a problem even with photos and video proof, and once that is finally done then they agree to send the engineer down. I had one really knowledgeable service engineer with one case, but I downrated the service because they gave him an inferior part (replaced a faulty Intel Wi-Fi card with Qualcomm?! like wth.) It's not his fault as they sent him the bad part as "equivalent". He even told me to just buy on Lazada the Intel card and change it back myself. The other 2 encounters were below average cos the guy came and in essence didn't really do anything useful the first visit, but only ordered the part later. This despite giving clear video proof of a faulty LCD panel in one case, and a blown thunderbolt port in the other (before the Intel patch), so it caused additional delays in service of the Latitude that necessitated follow up visits.

Check Reddit. Even in the USA there are numerous complaints about their warranty policies. Some have received brand new lemons that they couldn't get refunds for.

Generally though, the Latitude laptops are of pretty high quality so overall I'm not too unhappy with it. Their Latitude LCD panels are definitely better quality than Lenovo's Thinkpad line right up to their T series - Lenovo uses shockingly poor panels.

Okay, so the warranty process is pretty much tedious and subpar and going for 4y extended warranty might not be worth it. I'd prefer having a service warranty where i can just handover my hardware and not to worry too much. (shoutout to ban leong for fixing my gtx 1060 fuss-free last time)

I was planning to get the Dell Inspiron 15 (currently on sale for 699) for portability and cheap price, also it will be more of an occasional usage.
I feel that high quality electronics can be a lottery sometimes . So for now, I'm looking for something with decent after sales services.

Nevertheless, thanks for the advice and quoted experience!

To be fair, I have been spoilt by Apple's Genius Bar service, so that remains a very high bar. They do make a lot of people look sub bar, which is unfortunate.

Just putting this out there to manage expectations.

basic support is good enough if you can explain the problem well. if its hardware fault they just need evidence by running and showing bios test results. make sure to ask for ticket number to ensurr they log a case for you.

The technician that comes is outsourced from 2 third party companies. they can give you tips on how to report legitimate issues without requiring to providee evidence to dell support by wording in a certain way.
