That depend on whether or not you need to carry the drive around. If so, then a portal HDD is the way to go.

If fixed location with power source, can get the cheaper desktop HDD.

I don't carry it around much but prefer portable. No need additional power cable

Actually my dilemma is now I'm using a Buffalo, it's about 4 years old and 2TB (filled until about 350gb remaining) . I'm looking for a backup to that HDD.

then just get the cheapest $/gb hdd. u will use it to mirror the buffalo, and just keep it in the drawer, right?

I'm actually headed overseas for work for a few years. So I will either ship the Buffalo over, or bring the portable one over
