There are two DACs in this system. The Gustard X30, placed below the Serene, is connected to the monitor for movie streaming, while the LAiv is connected to the computer. Therefore, a preamp is needed.

Is the Gustard X30 worth the asking price? I'm considering to try out Linear Tube Audio Aero DAC, the reviews are promising for that one and one reviewer wrote it's an upgrade compared to my current DAC.

I like the X30, but it’s always difficult to predict how others will perceive a subjective quality like sound and comment on its value, especially if you already categorize it as expensive. In any case, it also depends on the setup. I had to swap out the X30 and Serene due to the limitations of Genelec active speakers, which didn’t fully showcase many aspects of their quality.

For my desktop, I have to use near-field placement. However, these coaxial speakers still perform exceptionally well in this setup. My main hi-fi setup, on the other hand, is a proper mid-field arrangement with speakers placed in an equilateral triangle relative to the listening position. By the way, it is also a 2.2 setup.

Can see your hifi setup? What do you use?

Yup, coaxial speakers can perform exceptionally well for near field. Both my Cabasse Baltic setups sound very coherent even when my head is literally almost in between them.

Saw that the Creative Katana V2 was on sale in Comex at $249 and I'm very tempted to upgrade. I'm wondering if there are better options at that price point?

X-Audio at Bukit Timah Plaza doing final clearance sale.

You can get Aego M 2.1 set from them for only $80. Oldie but still good.

That sounds like a great deal.

I just bought the Katana V2 because of just how convenient and space saving it was. Sound wise, I am upgrading from a katana v1 so it's just better in every way.

I did check out the edifier bookshelfs but the subwoofer really adds alot to the experience.

Maybe I would still pick up a set of the aego Ms just to see how legendary they are.

They are also clearing AE1 at $1.1k which is much more recent and has very good reviews. Sure you maybe thinking that’s a lot of money for desktop speakers but trust me it’s worth it.

And while there give a listen to the Vivid S12 as well to hear the kind of sound quality you can get once you put in serious money into hifi.
