Yeah so I've just started playing Evolve and realised it's a game that really requires communication. At the same time, I've been wanting to get a proper mic for a long time.

Right now I'm using an Andrea ANC-300

That is connected to my Asrock M8's onboard Creative SoundCore 3D mic jack.

I'm wondering if there are better mics to used, possibly powered ones or USB ones like the Creative Sound Blaster Omni Surround 5.1 (which has a dual mic array)

or a Blue Yeti

or are there other wireless head mounted mics (no ear pads, I have speakers)

The important thing about this mic is that it needs to pick up my voice only. None of the other environmental effects.

blue yeti....
Have you used it? How are the drivers like? Incomparably better than an 3.5mm mic?

By the way, the Yeti looks massive. I have a rather compact set up and can't see how I can use such a large mic without blocking the view of my screen and my keyboard lol.

I have both yeti and snowball. Snowball has a switch that allows you to choose between 3 settings. Yeti has 4 if I'm not wrong. You can pick which setting you prefer. Size wise yeti is huge and heavier. There is a gain control switch as well as mic mute on the yeti. There is also a headphone out jack on it. These usb mics are primarily used for daw recording but can be used for other purposes as well.

For unobstructed view maybe you can consider those gaming headsets. I have kingston hyperx cloud in case i need it. Bought on impulse on last black friday.

Noted.I think the yeti is completely out of the question in this case. I'm trying to get a mic only solution though as I already have speakers. I wonder about the blue snowflake. I've tried the Sound blaster zXR for example and while it does work, it's not the same as a mic only solution.

in front of my monitor

right now its at its shortest height
Goodness! That is tall. You've pushed the monitor that far up its stand but it still gets in the way.

My Set up is like this:

Does the mic work if set up on that space in the right or does it need to be right in front to use the cardiod function?

Thanks for the pic

You can use samson meteor. It's small and the quality is decent. Probably better than blue snowball but worse than yeti. I got it during Amazon black Friday lightning sale for 39.99usd I think. Really small and portable

Thanks! Looks a lot smaller too. Gonna find reviews of it now.

Noted, well, that of course also depends on how far your eyes are from the screen.

Could I ask if it might be possible for you to measure the minimum height of the mic and stand together? I'll then be able to do the calculation.
