In mobile mode, tapping on the thread title goes to the last read page for the thread which allows reading to pick up where we last stopped.

But in desktop mode (whether on PC or phone), doing that always goes to the first post of the thread. Quite sure this wasn't the original behavior but not sure when exactly did this bug started.

Correction, it is a bug in desktop mode. All thread links, be it in subscription or main forum display, in desktop mode are missing the new-post parameter in their URL and so goes to the first page instead of the latest.

Isn't this governed by the reading preference style option? :s11:

Doc, I haven't changed my preferences in years :D
Plus, regardless of the setting, it should take me to the newest unread post (be it first page or last) consistently whether in desktop or mobile mode.

But right now, mobile is behaving correctly but desktop is missing the url parameter

Hi Mystyque,

Indeed you are right about the difference of behaviour between the mobile site and the desktop mode. However, it's not that the link to the newest post is missing, it's that it's a little ambiguous.

Let me explain (with pictures).

In the main forum view, clicking on the thread title of a forum will bring you to the newest post of that thread.

However, when you are in that forum and you click on that title, it takes you to the first post of the thread.

To go to the newest post of that thread, you would need to click on that small box beside the thread title (which is the link to the latest unread post).

I'm not sure if this has clarified your doubts. :o

Thanks for the detailed response, it cleared up my doubts.

However, as a result, I would like to suggest changing the desktop template behaviour to mirror the mobile since it is the more sensible one.

This is because with the newpost parameter always attached to the thread title, the most common use cases are covered by the most visible UI element.

1. Member has never visited the thread, clicking on the more visible thread title brings them to the first post as expected.

2. Member visited the thread before, clicking on the thread title brings them to the newest unread post which is relevant.

3. Member visited the thread before but wants to go to the first page for whatsoever reason, the Page 1 link is always visible anyway. This would be the most unlikely use case so should be assigned to a less visible/usable element like a small button.
