Guys my PC idles around 20-25W, 50W when casually surfing web and watching youtube videos and 250W-300W when intensive gaming on games like DOOM(2016) and FFXV.

Is this normal? I feel its on the high side especially on gaming. :(

My rig overclocked. =>
I'm more impressed with the fact that you can run 5GHz with an air cooler :s13:

Cos I de-lidded my 8600k mah. That's why. Never de-lid no way can last 5ghz on air cooling. Not a fan of liquid cooling anyway. :o

Prime95 on small fft peaks at 75-80C after half hour. Normal and gaming usage barely hits 50+C :)

Here are some articles on the basics and why people do delidding of CPUs. :)

https://www.ekwb.com/blog/what-is-delidding/
https://www.pcgamer.com/delidding-your-cpu-is-scary-but-worth-itand-surprisingly-easy/

Basically the stock TIM used by Intel between the heat spreader and CPU is of low quality and causes the CPU to overheat despite using the best of coolers because the heat is trapped. Performing a delid results in massively lower temps but it voids warranty of your CPU.

Hope this helps clear your question. :)

You can ask for a person here called SPEED. He does delidding for a fee. :)

Yeah, saw the delid on your system spec, but still, I thought one need water cooling with delid to hit 5GHz. Known fact that Intel stock TIM is crap too :o

Bought myself debauer's delid tool as I wanted to delid my old 3570K, but system kick the bucket before the tool arrived. Now using Ryzen 2600 which is soldered TIM, end up not using the tool altogether :s22:

Can sell or keep it.

Who knows u might need it in future. :)

air cooling for 5ghz for coffeelake should not be a problem as long as your voltage is kept minimum. It's really all about the voltage, not the frequency.

Of cos other factors come into play too like good casing ventilation, cable management etc etc... :)

PRC brands that does regular monitoring and statictics, have. But cost around $20 as seen on Lazada, big and bulky, plus no smart home function.
For one with smart home and wireless monitoring, I think TP-Link HS110 is the cheapest in the market.

I am using two different type of power meters:
- Two from Lazada, those big bulky white unit with backlight and display, cost around $20 per pcs. Good thing is it comes with inbuilt display, can read off the power reading on the fly. Bad thing is that it's tall and bulky, cannot use on wall plugs that are on top of shelves and corner unit.
- One from TP-Link, Kasa HS110 Smart Wifi Home plug with monitoring function. More value for money at $39.90 from Hachi.tech, it comes with smart home function where I can control and monitor it from my mobile phone.

My PC build ---> is consuming around 200W on idle and low load, and up to 250W when overclock and high load.

Thanks for the recommendation. Was monitoring this thread and this TPLink smart plug is extremely useful. I can't quite access a power checker since I have a cable area that is covered. So it makes no sense for me to open up my table's cable management area just to monitor the wattage. So this device allowing me to monitor via my phone is awesome! :o

Why does your rig consume less power on idle? What kind of magic is this? Mine is idling around 128W with the usual softwares and chrome open. Watching a video brings it up to 160W.
Gaming on Overwatch brings it up to 350W to 380W.

How come so high?! Is it you put as maximum performance under your Windows settings? Or your graphics card is always at max settings? Mine is balanced and optimal settings.

It makes a lot of difference in power consumption. :)

I've taken some pics for you to have a reference of the physical sizing just in case you still face space limitation.

LoL. Mine is Balanced. But I did modify to allow CPU to have minimal power of 5% and maximum of 100% along with Moderate Power Savings for PCIe.

I mean I did OC my 6700K to 4.6GHz. Could that be the case? On idle, it will be 130W. CPU around 1% load and 800MHz.

1080Ti idling at 0% with 1531MHz clock speed.

Could it be the other USB devices using up the power? Such as those LED lights, fan and charging mousepad and 3 SSDs?
I am using 2 AIO coolers for the CPU and GPU. Could that be the cause of the overly excessive power draw?

Weirdly enough, if I lock my PC and the video output to the monitors turns off, power draw drops to 64W.

PS. Smart plug is only connected to the desktop PC and not the monitors.
So is it really the GPU drawing a lot of power even on idle?

Can, it's just like a regular multi-plug, just one socket instead of 3 sockets. So yeah, can plug anything with a 13A head to it, including your fridge and microwave. You can even connect a extension plug to it if you have a couple of appliances that you want to measure the total power draw.

Only cannot connect aircon since those are 15A round pin head, this feller is rated for 13A only.

test by setting monitor to 120hz or 60hz, just to see if gpu idle clocks drop...
oops native already 144hz, can it be set lower...?

Hahaha! Omg! You are right! It is now idling at 66.2W at 1440p 60Hz even though I have like 12 chrome tabs open and an external HDD connected to the PC as well.

The weird part is this. at 144Hz 1440p, it idles around 70W.

It only seems to happen if I change it to 165Hz for my monitor which the monitor considers as overclocked. But that is on the monitor's side. Weird why it will consume twice as much power at 127W for only a 21Hz difference from 165Hz to 144Hz. Hmm....

Also GPU clock speeds dropped from 1531MHz at 0% load on idle to 139MHz at 0% load on idle instead at 144Hz from the 165Hz.

Thanks so much for the help! :s12:

No problem :)

I rem got people report their gpu clocks not dropping at idle...

IIRC last time (maxwell) it was high idle clk at 144/165hz, but 120hz ok
Now u report high idle clk at 165hz, but 144hz ok :)

Either nvidia changed the idle clk/monitor hz setting in their nvidia driver... or 10 series different from 900 series gpu
