Desktop PC upgrade advise

Hi all, recently my 6 year old PC died due to a faulty PSU (theres some sparks and burnt smell).
In order to resume my gaming asap, i bought a superflower legion GX pro 650W during 9.9 shopee sale.

While waiting for it to arrive, i had a look at my old PC specs, thinking perhaps its time for an upgrade or should start planning for it. Can advise or recommend me which parts to replace, in order of priority?

My current PC specs:

Zotac GTX 1070 Amp Ed (bought in 2016)

Dell S2722 DGM (1440p) bought at June 2022

Kingston Value Ram 8GBx2 2133Mhz (bought in 2016)

Superflower Leadex gold 90+ Full Modular 550W PSU (bought in 2016, burnt, waiting for my superflower PSU to arrive)

Coolermaster N200 Case with Window

Asus H110m/M.2 motherboard

Intel Core i5 6500 processor

Samsung SSD 860 EVO, 500GB for my main storage
Samsung SSD 840 EVO, 250GB for my Windows drive

I intend to game on 1440p(qhd with my current monitor), budget wise aiming on current most price efficient parts (saw on forums like i5 12400 with B660M?)
Is my GTX 1070 able to continue to game on 1440p?

For GTX 1070, u won't get a good 100+ fps and probably have to play at low settings. However, it's something you can temporarily live with.

I believe it really depends on the game play as 1070 not really a weak GPU in general if not compare to current generation and using with vrr monitor should still holding on its performance for some games.

if they arent broken and still serve ur use case well, then i dont see any need to upgrade.

When I use a high refresh rate monitor, I will try to target a stable high frame rate. In that case, he is using a 1440p 165Hz monitor. 1070 doesn't do it any justice.

I am using a g-sync 144hz display, and the experience of a fixed 141 fps and having it fluctuate is not the same. The smoothness and consistency is not there when it fluctuates. I do feel it's a night and day difference after having the experience.

Also, many high refresh rate displays operating at lower Hz will encounter overshoot.

I still playing with my 1070 @ 1440p 60Hz currently so far I am alright with the performance on mostly single player offline game no issue.

Yes, indeed, i have a 1440p 165hz monitor, if i am to utilize it well , which part should i upgrade, and the recommended parts needed? Since my new PSU is at 650W, should i choose a newer graphic card that fits this?

As for the games i play, i play a variety of old games like warframe, guild wars 2 and moving on to newer games like apex legends, forza horizon 5. In the upcoming days, i might aim for games like cyber punk 2077, FF15, COD if they are on sale.

Depend on the game requirement. I have tried GI, COD Warzone, Fortnite etc....with high setting and can achieve decent fps(no lagging) using my ex Zotac GTX1070 w/o any RT or DLSS on.

However if u planning for RT gaming, if best to wait for 40xx GPU to support 1440p gaming. I mean if u can wait for it. Else get a RTX 3070 min to support 1440p gaming.

Upgrade ur cpu n mainboard to support Gen4 Nvme and get a gen4 nvme ssd. it cut down alot of loading time.....^^

not necessarily. even a relatively lower range 20 series card like the 2060 super will still provide over 30% performance increase over the 1070. but yes if looking to buy current gen 30 series or 6000 series card it is better to buy mid range as the best prices are there. with next gen high end cards coming by the end of the year, very likely current gen high end cards will fall in price a lot by then so not a good idea to buy high end now, though mid to low end should not be affected as much.

I agree should get 750W at least, then when the time comes there are more options. It also helps account for transient spikes as well.

I think 1 x cable should have split to 2 x 8 pin, then 2 x cable got total of 4 x 8 pin connector. Depends on which PSU.

If u stick to 3060ti level still can do passable 1440p and within i5-12xxx limits. With AM4 Ryzen can also still go to 3070 with a 650W PSU

with FSR introduced and available to GTX 1000 series your GPU upgrade will not be meaningful if going to 2000 series.

the obvious upgrade path with your new 650w psu will only be 3060ti (similar performance to 2080 or 2080 super level) with DLSS & FSR upscaling processing power advantages.

hi all, thanks all for the replies.

Update: My Superflower legion 650W PSU arrived and immediately setup with my old rig. However, my PC still refused to boot up. I googled online for help, tried the paperclip in PSU method, verified my new PSU is working fine, even my PC fans are working. I noticed there is a green LED on my GTX 1070 Amp, which i assumed nothing wrong with my graphics card. what is weird that i noticed there is no longer any lighted LED on my Asus motherboard anymore. I had checked all connectors, on off so many times, but theres no LED (except on graphics card), no sound, nothing. Can i declared that my Motherboard is faulty? Correct me if i missed out any steps in troubleshooting. Speaking of which, when i first observed sparks and burnt smell on my old PUS earlier, could it "fry" the mother board as well?

In the worst case scenario, seem like i had bought this new PSU for nothing. Now i have to start sourcing for the remaining individual parts now, which includes new Mobo+CPU, RAM, case and new SSDs as well. Kindly enlighten me on the parts selection below, using my newly bought 650W PSU and my existing Zotac 1070 for now:

CPU/MObo: i5 12400 + MSI Pro B660M (can only find wifi version so far)
Cooler: i dont overclock, can i use default stock cooler?
RAM: Klevv Bolt - 2 x8GB 3600MHz RAM
SSD: Can i use back existing samsung 840/850 SSD, or might as well to upgrade to PCI NVME SSD as well? any particular SSDs to recommend?
Case: NR400? corsair 4000D? i am not a pro, so a newbie friendly case recommendation will be good. currently using CM N200 case, but some parts are rusty, i might as well change new

You probably want to disconnect your SSD, ram, and GPU, then turn it on to see if the same symptoms occur.

You can't overclock the 12400. it will run too hot with no power limits using the stock cooler. I suggest using any of these 3 coolers. Pick accordingly to your budget.

Go with Samsung. It's quite a safe choice. 980, 970 Evo Plus.

A noob-friendly case is probably Meshify 2 Compact, a good all-rounder but expensive.

NR400 and 4000D are both fine.

What kind of size are you looking for? And the front panel, do you need USB C? Need RGB?
