Development idea (Touch ID)

I realised that iPhone 6 has the "Reachability" option in Settings>General>Accessibility whereby you can double-tap the home button to bring the top of the screen into reach.

The beauty of this is just by tapping the "Track ID" area and not pressing down the home button.

Just wondering if there is a possibility to develop an app using the very same idea such as double tapping the "Track ID" area to wake the phone thus minimizing the usage of the home & power buttons?

why don't you register a startup, write a proposal to get funding and contact Apple?

Depends if Apple has that API available for developers to use

There should be since there are already apps utilizing it but for it to be able to wake the phone means the code has to be incorporated into the ios itself.

that would incur a waste of battery usage.

---
the phone would constantly have to supply power to the area, and
the phone would constantly have to poll to check if someone has touched it.

and think about all the accidental touches.

Oh you mean writing an app to utilise the double-tap to home button API(if there is even one) to wake the phone?

Not possible, apps are sandboxed and there's limits to what it can do

Hmm, but I thought they're opening up and allowing Touch ID to be integrated into apps?

What his/her idea is, the app is allowed access to the sensor 24/7 or when the phone is asleep and when you tap the Touch ID, it wakes it up

Different from the Touch ID API

However, it can be done if device is jailbroken

And imo, developing an app just for that is pointless. it's best for Apple team themselves to incoporate in the IOS if they want.

if this were to really be developed, are you going to put it on app store for free or make people pay $1.99?

Notice the metal ring?
It's used to wake up the home button so you don't need to keep polling. There is no battery wastage.

But the only one who can do the lock/unlock with double tap is Apple. Those kinds of feature need OS support.

thats what i said earlier, this function has to be incorporated into the iOS. and no it doesn't kill the battery, G2 and G3 have been using such a function which didn't kill the battery. in addition, you don't really need a program to loop it, all you need is a modified kernel just like how its done in android. (i am not trying to cause a hoohaa between android or iOS here btw, just a random thought that came to my mind).

calm down, this is just a discussion. it most likely won't happen till at least iOS 10.

Simple, you switch to Android G2 and G3 and settle your need for this function. :s13:

The home button isn't as weak as it was in the older iPhones. So there is no need to reduce usage of the phone buttons in the way you mentioned. Besides you still need to press down on the Touch ID for it to scan your fingerprints, placing your finger lightly on the sensor doesn't cut it.

If you really need such a function, it is available for jailbreak now so the idea isn't new.

Yeah since the introduction of the iPhone 5, they added a metal bracket for the home button

Btw you don't have to press down the Touch ID to scan your fingerprint.

Try waking your phone with the sleep/wake button and touch Touch ID - not press, just touch and it will unlock the phone.
