Difference between Intel 3rd and 4th Gen CPU?

Hi guys. What are the difference between the 3rd and upcoming 4th gen Intel CPU? Is it worth the wait until June?

I planning to get a DIY rig this week or next for gaming purposes. Or should i wait for the 4th gen?

Lower power consumption/heat out put and better igpu. If want to OC maybe 4th gen is better.

The only improvement is power consumption. Performance is improved very negligibly.

Better IGPU.

Performance wise... probably 10-15% CPU increase.

Overall, better performance per watt.

Bro, leaked benchmarks show an average of less than 10% IPC improvement. 15% is from Intel (like I'd believe them). AVX2 will be beneficial, but more useful for number crunchers with software that they can recompile, than for average users.

So far, there is no indication of FSB/BUS overclocking for non-k models (probably not likely, given it is Intel), but it will be present in -k models. No more ****ty TIM and solder instead. All in all, the overclocking potential (of -k models) should match SB at least.

Besides, with only one month to go I don't see any reason not to wait.

Looks like I'll have to wait until 2015 for Broadwell and Skylake for a significant performance difference.. :(

Another "sneak peek" about upcoming Haswell might not work with "some older" PSUs?

Which desktop system (especially DIY with casing cooling fan) not using more than 0.05a.

Almost all ATX PSUs able to power up and maintain running state with a connection on the green wire (pin 16/Power_On) and any black (GND/return) wire at zero/near zero state. Why would 0.05a be an issue to begin with?

To take advantage of AVX2, the software needs to be compiled with a compiler supporting the new instruction set.

AVX2 will boost vectors of integer calculations, which will be useful in heavy mathematical computation like encoding. The impact on gaming will be fairly minor, if any.

If you get your freak on by an extreme low power state you may need to get a new power supply if you want to use the new C6/C7 low power states of Intel's upcoming Haswell processors. These new power states require a power supply that can maintain a minimum current load of 0.05A on the CPU exclusive 12V2 rail.


The previous ATX12V v2.3 design guidelines called for a minimum load of 0.5A on the CPU power rail, so a lot of older and budget power supplies will likely not meet the new specification, resulting in stability or shutdown issues once the system enters the C6/C7 power state.


Of course, it might just be a nefarious plot to sell more PSUs...

3. does my current system unable to cope with what im doing?

cost is not much a factor... only make me buy it earlier or later
what set instructions it carries considered as features, i may or may not utilize it

but thats me, for those of you with itchy hands please make chipmakers happy on launch days

Except for gamers and professional software users, we have already crossed the point of good enough CPU performance with C2D. As long as MS does not keep bloating its OS and Office suite, few can tell the difference b/w a C2D and a first gen i5. How many can tell the difference between a Nehalem i5 and an Ivy Bridge i5 in a blind test consisting of general office usage?

Another trend with games is that the GPU is becoming the bottleneck. The exceptions are large scale strategy games with a large number of units and poor multi-core scaling (eg. Total War and Starcraft), or badly made console ports. For the latter, nothing will save them.

The developers of x264 went one step further. They went to implement AVX2 versions of their functions in assembly. But you're right regarding gaming, I think SB and IvB owners can keep their systems. Which bodes well for my system's resell value, I guess :D

I also planning to upgrade with my original intention towards Asrock H77M motherboard + Intel i5-3570. No gaming for me.

For PSU issue, since BIOS allow an option to disable C7, so guess current PSU should be OK. The problem is which PSU support Haswell for new setup users to future proof their purchase.

Perhaps, I should wait for 1-2 months. At the end of the day, should I decided not to get Haswell platform, I guess, there's should be a price reduction for current Ivy bridge platform to welcome Haswell launch.

Reminds me of hand tuned BLAS. Hand tuned assembly is still necessary for squeezing out maximum performance.

New chipset, new socket, DDR3 ram. Unconfirmed DDR4 for Broadwell. Expected DDR4 for Broadwell E.

It will not matter as much for desktop users as they are less likely to let their computers sleep. Even when sleeping, the new sleep states make so little difference to power consumption. The new sleep states are far more useful to mobile users.

Perhaps, I should wait for 1-2 months. At the end of the day, should I decided not to get Haswell platform, I guess, there's should be a price reduction for current Ivy bridge platform to welcome Haswell launch.

Intel usually does not drop the prices of EOL CPUs. They do a direct replacement at each price point with a new CPU.

If haswell is 10-15 percentage, then i wait hold my rig for the next tick tock..

Imo no significant increase.. Just power consumption matter.. Unless buying low power psu.

Still waiting for applications and software to be more optimized for more than 2 core.
Quad core > Dual core at best by 30% only performance wise.
