Hi all,

I am interested to take the leap from analog to digital line with the upgrade to fibre broadband.

However, I have certain concerns which I hope the people here can enlighten me.

Currently, I have 2 home phones. 1 in living room, 1 in my parents room.

I understand that the digital line only allows it to be connected to 1 phone?

My parents will still require a phone connection in their room. Does that mean I need to redo cabling?

You can buy the splitter and use it on ONT, its the same as wall rj11 socket. Yes you need to rewire your rj11 cabling to enable digital voice..

You could buy a 2-handset DECT system. One will connect to your ONT, the other will connect wirelessly to the base-station that's connected to the ONT. You can similarly buy a 4-handset system or even a 6-handset system.

There is no need to redo existing phone wiring, just connect the output from ONT (or RG) to the RJ11 socket in living room. In your case, a splitter is needed in the living room (LR).

Code:
TP->ONT (TEL1)->Splitter->Phone (LR)
                        ->RJ11 (LR)--->RJ11(PR)->Phone

Note: Made sure that the existing phone service is terminated (ie, no signal on phone) before connecting cable from ONT, best to use a voltmeter to double confirm.

You did not say who you sign up your fibre with. If it is SingTel, then you can keep your existing analog line as the "free home line" and you stop paying quarterly fees when your fibre plan take effect.

Analog phone still work when there is power failure, ONT spoilt, Internet down, etc. If your parents are elderly, they need the phone most to call you when there is power failure. The only thing is outgoing calls are chargeable as present whereas digital outgoing calls are free.

If you sign up with other ISP, then digital is the only way.

If you're using SingTel, you can request to retain your Tel analogue line. Tell them before you sign up. So that you don't have to rewire your Tel line.

That's what I did.

SingTel includes Digital Tel line that is connected to your Wireless Router, that's only one Tel port. If you want to rewire, you use this port to the existing socket outlet. Your electrician should advise you accordingly.

I too also agree that analog home phone is the best, as which only SingTel is still providing analog homeline service. :)

Currently using Singtel ADSL. Switching to Starhub Fibre 100 Mbps since the amount I'm paying for Singnet is the same if I switch to Starhub.

Parents are of senior citizen age but not that old. My mother's only requirement is that her room must have a phone for her usage.

As my TP is not anywhere near where my living room phone is, the easiest scenario is that I still stick to the analog line and continue to pay $10 every month and just use the Fibre internet solely for Internet purposes.

The result of this scenario will leave my desktop in my room with no internet capabilities.

Any recommendations for wireless adapters/routers?

Was thinking of getting this plug and play Net Gear wireless adapter from Amazon. Available for free shipping!

Yup this is what I'm going to do after upgrading to fibre bb and terminating my paid fixed phone line.

However, if there's no power to the ONT the digital line will not work. I'm not sure whether those DECT phones with power backup will work in this case?

Anyone using DECT phones can advise?

Currently have 2 phone numbers from ST and M1...

M1 is free when take up the fibre plan...ST is the backup ones in case power failure.

avg $10 calls made in and out per month... still cheaper than ST.

Hopefully this time round ST dont play with me for the homeline again. Made a call last yr Dec to terminate caller ID which was with us for many years... and was ensure it will be terminate within 3 working days. Jan got the bill and it still there...Lucky the Dec call got took down the name of the CSO... called another CSO, he got the courage to inform me that I subscribe the Non Display numbers for long time already...That so BS... talked with him for 30mins and was informed that it be terminated the Non Display numbers with 3 days... also took down his name.

Also create an account to monitor if there will be any "weird" services add in or not... so far none but cant get back the full amount for the Non Display numbers...

March 2014 came and still like that I cancel the numbers immediately...

Cannot play with customers like that ones... decades of using the same home numbers already.

DECT phones with power backup also no use, when ONT is down --> no internet, no digital voice service!

Yup, your DECT phone still got power but no dial tone!

Caller ID and Number Non-Display are TWO separate services. Even if they had been bundled 2 in 1 last time, but if cancel only one then the other still remain in service. They can't cancel the other because they did not receive instruction to do so.

but the main thing is all the while we take up the caller ID only and suddenly he inform us we got the Number non display...

all the bills also reflect only caller ID and not non display numbers unless it charged together at the price of $10.

got used mobile phones to call before also...same thing display numbers and using home line to call also display numbers and not "PRIVATE"

Finally they issue an update of the bill by post...

Rebate of $10...not much but better than nothing...

if like that can the analog line still receive call? If people dial the old number, is it the digital or analog phone ringing?
