Trying to complete a potential first build and trying to decide whether or not to go with an APU (can upgrade to GPU if needed)

or bite the bullet and pay the inflated prices of CPU + GPU.

option A: wait end of year launch 4000 series APU

option B: ryzen 3600 + gpu

Even the best APU is still slower than a low-midrange GPU

Come moi help you make decision.

AMD Ryzen 3 4200G was benchmarked in 3DMark 11 and scored 6825 points in the Physics and 3489 points in the graphics benchmark. The graphics side performance puts the chip ahead of the Ice Lake GT1 graphics chip with 32 EUs and on par with a low-voltage tuned MX250 GPU.

Even old 2016 NVIDIA 1060 3GB is over 250% better MX250

NVIDIA 2060 is over 500% better

Unless TS is going to play in 720p in LOW or play OLD games 4-5 years old.
Otherwise please get a proper GPU.

its not a far fetched idea that when ryzen 4000 launches their prices would be inflated too, especially with covid still disrupting supply. anyway when those launch, prices of current gen parts will fall.

i think it largely boils down to your budget and needs. the case where u would only need an apu is when 1) u dont have enough budget for a decent gpu, 2) u want a sff pc that cant fit large powerful gpu and/or 3) ur workload is very light (just browsing web, watching videos).

apu is good for students on budget build or people for general tasks.

i never like apu cause it shared/occupied the cpu resources. As it heat up, the performance also affected.
i felt even cpu+$50 gpu is faster than apu.......

1 thing i don't like about cpu...is when gpu die.... the whole pc is down. so i always keep spare gpu while waiting new gpu to arrive.

Really depend on your usage if general use for work and etc.
APU or even Intel + Intel iGPU will do fine.
But for gaming get a decent CPU + graphic as APU gaming
is weak as compared with dedicated graphic card.

TS, you need to determine what are you going to use the computer for that put you in this dilemma. APU are good mostly for light gaming, assuming that you are not going to install a dedicated graphic card. If gaming is not your main concern and use for this computer, then an APU should suffice.

For my case, I am using an APU (Ryzen 5 3400G which I got just a week back) to go with my TV in the living room. This will enable me to use it for media playback and some light gaming, in case I want to play it on a bigger screen. I did not bother to wait for the Ryzen 3 4200G because I feel the graphic solution is a step back from the older Ryzen 5 3400G (6 vs 11CUs). While CPU is slower on the 3400G by quite a fair bit, I am fine since I am not going to use it for CPU intensive work, other than gaming.

Option A will be available before the end of the year. Ryzen 4000 APUs are practically already in production (as the Ryzen 4000 series mobile)

Just give it like 2 months or so. Just gotta figure out what you're going to do as everyone else says

If i am not gaming will go for the apu. Save electricity.

If u are gaming even light gaming, go for the basic ryzen and cheap gpu combo . Beats the apu hands down.
