Dear all,

I am still using the rig --->

with a few changes:

1) 4 X 1gb ram
2) Palit card failed, and I went back to Gigabyte 7900GS
3) Sharkoon T28 Casing

Recently, my monitor (used 8 yrs) starts to have a patch of dead pixels so I think its time to change.

But, if I were to upgrade to widescreen, also also watch HD videos, I think its a good time to upgrade the card.

I am thinking of:

Monitor: Philips 234E5QHAB (review not bad, not very ex,, Philips has served me well and I want to go back to them)

Graphics card: Gigabyte GTX750 OC 1GB (Gigabyte is extremely durable and reliable for me and I like it)

My rationale: I am too lazy to overhaul everything, besides, the mobo is still going strong. I mostly surf net now, watch movies, hope to watch more HD stuff, and once in a while gaming, like COH, Far Cry, Oblivion, GTA4, no need hard core graphics.

My only concern is since my system is 32bit, max ram is 4gb, so i can only go 1gb card max, if not it will eat into my ram.

Any comments? Thanks!

1) Gigabyte cards are known to be relatively expensive. For the cost of your Gigabyte GTX 750 (199 (1GB)/215 (2GB)), I can easily get a much faster Powercolor R7 265 (229) with a small topup.

2) Nonsense, the amount of RAM usage has got completely nothing to do with what GPU you have in your system, only the programs you are running will then have an impact on RAM usage.

3) Consider downloading the Vista 64 bit OS .iso and reinstall your OS to a 64-bit version. The 32-bit version can only use 3GB of RAM, which may explain why your total avaliable system RAM only shows as 3+GB and giving you the mistaken impression that your GPU is eating up your RAM.

Thanks for the explanation and inputs.

If let's say budget is below 1.5k for my usage, what would be the recommendation?

It shall be assumed that you want a rig and monitor for $1500.

CPU+ Mobo: MSI B85-G41 PC MATE + i5 4460 (357)
RAM: G.SKILL PC 12800/1600MHZ DDR3 CL11 VALUE RAM (8GB) (98)
GPU: SAPPHIRE R9 280 3GB DUAL-X (285) (lazada.com)
SSD: CRUCIAL MX100 256GB (160)
HDD: TOSHIBA 1TB 7200RPM (69)
DVD-RW: LG 24X DVD-RW SATA OEM (25)
PSU: SUPERFLOWER HX 600M GOLD MODULAR (109)
Case: DEEPCOOL TESSERACT (65)
OS: WINDOWS 7 HOME PREM (125)
Monitor: Dell S2340L (199) (SITEX)

Total cost: $1492

Unless otherwise stated, buy at PC Themes, #04-15, and ask for discounts. DIY yourself. If you can't into DIY, get PC Themes to assemble for you for a fee.

Notes:

1) This rig is capable of playing your games at High-Max settings.

2) If you want the Philips 234E5QHAB, it is going to cost you $249 at SITEX.

3) Got Mastercard? Consider buying the GPU, SSD, PSU and case at lazada.com on a Monday and get 10% discounts when you pay with a Mastercard. Do note that discounts are capped at $50 per transaction and you will have to buy these items seperately.

4) As your old computer is still working, consider using it as a HTPC/BT/DL/NAS rig instead. No point wasting perfectly good hardware.

Really thanks for the inputs! I will go through it. :D
