You think these Low SES people will bother washing the bottles first? If anything they will bring their pails and fill up to use at home.
Wow 6 months only and 48 mil collected? Given SG throws 1 billion a year that means return rate is 9.1% lolWe thank Raymond Lim for his views (Is drink container return scheme a boost for recycling or side-hustle income?, Sept 30).
The Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS), also known as Return Right, complements broader recycling efforts by encouraging the public to return empty plastic and metal beverage containers at dedicated return points.
This results in a pure high-value recycling material stream that can be remade into new food-grade packaging.
The early results are encouraging. Between April 1 and Sept 27, more than 48 million beverage containers were returned through the scheme, diverting over 823 tonnes of material from incineration for recycling.
We agree that the scheme should be assessed based on its environmental outcomes and the experience on the ground.
As the scheme is still in its initial stages, the National Environment Agency and BCRS Ltd will continue to monitor recovery and recycling outcomes, operational performance, resource requirements, and feedback from the public and industry.
These insights will help us improve the scheme to make it more effective and convenient over time.

Exercise ish importantPeople still queuing to deposit cans so no need to talk so much.
Erm..cannot be when the plan was being drafted, there is no projection being made like what is the 'breakeven' point of collections is needed for the scheme to be sustainable? They would have known with the 48m returned how much impact it would have made ma, we didnt enforce sustainability standards for nothing leh.We thank Raymond Lim for his views (Is drink container return scheme a boost for recycling or side-hustle income?, Sept 30).
