I am not sure if there is such thread before, I did a search but maybe it eluded me, so if there is an existing thread you can go ahead and delete this.

Basically I would like to discuss about home backup solutions, because I am looking to do up one for myself. I have had a hard disk fail on me once, and I would like to avoid that pain again.

So right now I am planning a backup system for my family, which consists of:
2 desktops (1 in living room and 1 in my room)
2 laptops (my own Surface Pro 3 and my sister's HP laptop)

I plan to replace my 3TB drive in my main rig with a HGST 3TB HDD, and partition it into two drives, one for daily use and one for weekly backups. And then there would be a 2 bay NAS in the living room that provides backups for all the computers in the house, running in RAID 1 with 2 HGST 3TB.

If you think there could be improvements done to this, please do share and advise, and also you can share your own setups too. I know there are different solutions to different needs but I guess it would be good to look at each other's backup solutions for a reference.

still i rather u backup everything in the NAS though. i mean for partition wise, if the whole drive is spoil all files are courrpted as well though. so might as well throw into NAS.

Maybe I elaborate more for my case ba :s13:

Was thinking of partitioning, half will be for personal use, the other half would backup the partition weekly.

Then after that, the next day, the backup partition would be backed up in the NAS, and cycle repeats.

I am still figuring whether I should back up my other laptops directly to NAS

Just buy 2 nas and perform replication between each other. Migrate all of the data into NAS.

This partition idea will help partially only unfortunately; what if the entire HDD GG?

Why not back up straight into the NAS, and then back the NAS up into another NAS (or at least, a different HDD)?

Also, your 2 bay NAS in your family room won't be enough for your entire family, this config means only 3TB of space and already your main rig is using 3TB?

1) Never a good idea to partition a HDD as
it is still a single disk.
Even with data on the second partition, if the HDD
fails that's it.
Unless you RAID it than different but laptop not possible.

2) Consider trying out using this software?

http://www.acronis.com/en-sg/personal/computer-backup/

Backup the entire PC onto your NAS using the Acronis software.
Anything wrong can restore easily and also easier to
managed backup for various machines.

For family photos/videos...
1st Copy - HGST Ext HDD 4TB
2nd Copy - HGST Ext HDD 4TB (Daily backups using bundled Touro software)
3rd Copy - Amazon Cloud Drive (Weekly backups - manual)

your own recommendation seems good enough for home use.
Focus on how easy and how frequent do you intent to sync the data between each machine to your NAS instead.
