Hi guys, appreciate if you can share some input on this rig I'm planning to DIY. I'm using it mainly for work, watching movies, some gaming (FIFA 15 and the like, nothing too demanding on GPU), storage of documents and photos/videos.

CPU: i5-4460
MB: Asus H97M-E
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz (2x4GB)
HDD: Toshiba 2TB
DVDRW: Samsung 24x DVDRW SATA
PSU: Coolermaster Thunder 600W
Casing: Silverstone PS08B

I have an existing Powercolor HD Radeon 5770 so I won't be getting a new GPU yet. As with my previous 2 pcs, each lasted for around 6 years and I probably will stick with this for at least 5 years. Is this rig reasonable for the next 5-6 years?

And one more thing. Not sure if I should use Win 7 or 8.1. Would be good if you guys can share some input on which OS is recommended. Thanks in advance!:)

$800 dont need to go till i5. Games like nba arent intensive. Go for a more better psu and a ssd.

ASRock h81m hds + i3-4150 ~ $217
Crucial 8gb 1600mhz value ram ~ $100
Seagate 7200rpm 2tb hdd ~ $107
Plextor m6s 128gb ~ $99
Xigmatek 500w 80+ bronze semi modular psu ~ $70
Xigmatek mach chassis ~ $69
Lg dvd drive ~ $21
Windows 7 home premium 64bit oem ~ $115

Total ~ $798. Buy at tradepac. Diy

Future proofing is impossible at the current rate we going. It does not mean that by spending more = future proofing. Go for something what you need will do.

M.2 is too new in market and have yet to mature. As of now it is too expensive.

help, royfrosty!

I've DIY my new pc, i followed your guide actually and then switch on the pc. Everything seems to be working, LEDs flashed, dvdrom can open tray, the keyboard lights flashed, but on my monitor(actually a tv) showed no signal despite he hdmi in place.:(

is it because of the tv? or is it because I missed out something somewhere? btw there's no beep of any kind signalling any hardware errors. btw i using onboard graphics while starting up.

Change HDMI cable, use another HDMI port on the TV. As a last resort, plug in your HD 5770 and use the HDMI output on the GPU.

No such thing, where got so high tech one. If such a thing exists, it would not be possible to have an open air system where the mobo is simply laid on the mobo box and the entire system is cooled by KDK fan.
