Rig with Windows 8.1 Black Screen

Hi all,

Have DIY-ed a computer 5 years back and now it's giving me problem frequently.

Just today, when I'm booting up the computer, the Windows 8 loading screen gets loaded. Upon loaded, it went into complete black screen with no mouse cursor nor nothing. Is there anything I can do on or it would be wiser to overhaul the system completely?

I need some help regarding this to see if it is advisable to change just the faulty parts or re-build a new computer. I was planning to re-use some parts that my current computer have like, PSU, HDD, DVDRW.

Theses are my current specs that I have.

CPU - Intel Core i5 760 @ 2.80GHz
MB - Asus P7P55D-E PRO
Memory - Kingston DDR3 2GB x2
Graphic Card - AMD Radeon HD 6870
PSU - Seasonic X-Series 750W 80Plus Gold
HDD - WD Blue 1TB
OS - Windows 7

Start with this: http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/216206
Also indicate the PSU, you are using.
I am no guru in the dealing with minidump files but at least provide a screenie on the BSOD so others can help you.

The following better get new one:
1. HDD, get SSD for OS drive, use current HDD as storage
2. PSU, get new one if you don't want risk of blow-up taking away your new parts as well

Have added PSU into the thread. So it might be PSU problem?

This is the event log i get from the computer.
Code:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000116 (0xfffffa8003aeb4e0, 0xfffff8800431045c, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000002). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 032815-16941-01.

My graphic card sometimes shows it crashed and the event shows this error
Code:
Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

Go download the latest AMD drivers
Go google Display Driver Uninstaller, use it to clean and restart
Install the drivers, and monitor for BSoD

The BSODs are from display driver resetting. If the reset was successful, you get the second message. If the reset was not successful i.e. timed out, you get the BSOD and that error code.

You can try uninstalling and then doing a clean reinstall of video drivers.

It may also be worthwhile to consider doing a clean install of Win 7 and all drivers. If you are going this route, you might want to pick up an SSD, which will be a nice upgrade for your system.

yup have did what was told. Apparently, i encountered the issue even when doing a clean installation of OS. it's always this problem that causes it to happen.

In a sense if I wanna upgrade the system, what are some of the parts I can consider upgrading?

Don't remember got sound coming out as well. Tried to enter to safe mode. It works fine. But to add on, this system has been giving me problems last time as well. BSOD, system freezes after clean installation of OS as well.

Conduct memtest on your RAMs as well as checking your HDD SMART status.

I did changed a brand new HDD lately. Not very long ago, just recently. Initially I was suspecting its my graphic card that I causing it. Oh well, I'm really not sure not. Right now, its giving me black screen, I can't boot into Windows. Will try safe mode and shall see.

Also use Enable VGA mode in advanced startup option and observe the situation...

Some update,

I completely wiped the computer and do a fresh installation of Windows.

I'm suspecting its the graphic card that is causing the issue. As upon re-installation my computer, it is working perfectly fine, after I installed the driver for the graphic card, the screen turn black completely.

Was thinking to get a graphic card to replace it. Any recommendation?

Haha :D

Given my rig that was built many years back already, was thinking to do some upgrading as well.

Code:
CPU - Intel Core i5 760 @ 2.80GHz
MB - Asus P7P55D-E PRO
Memory - Kingston DDR3 2GB x2
Graphic Card - AMD Radeon HD 6870
PSU - Seasonic X-Series 750W 80Plus Gold
HDD - WD Blue 1TB

Any parts I can upgrade it and fit into that motherboard as well? Been away from hardware awhile. Not sure what's the market price and good hardware parts as well.

Can suggest me parts for upgrading as well MoneyFace? :D:D
