DIY NAS - need advice

hi guys.

need some advice for my own NAS at home.

OS: windows 8 pro
RAID: software raid 5 using intel ICH10r from the haswell chipset
CPU: i5-4430
mobo: H87M-G43
RAM: 2X4GB Ripjaws 1600mhz
hdd: Plextor m5p 128gb for OS, 4 X 3TB WD RED for raid 5
Case: Haf X
PSU: FSP 550 Platinum

my network at home is gigabit. i would prefer the redundancy of raid 5. it is not a backup. instead, this NAS will backup every hour to a cloud backup server.

please comment on my setup thanks.

1. i heard even the slowest haswell cpu (which i chose) is overkill for software raid, is this true? if it is not enough, then i will purchase faster haswell chips.

2. i understand that no matter what speeds i get, it will be bottlenecked by gigabit network which is ~120mbps. so will raid 5 with the WD RED HDD get me speeds that at least near 120mbps? anyone who tried this setup can give comments what stripe size and settings usedd etc.

3. i currently have a very old mobo that has ich9r which gave me software raid 5 speeds that almost maxs out gigabit from samsung f3 hdd. this will be the first time i am using ich10r, would it be similar performances or actually slower?

4. do i need more ram? will it actually affect speeds? i heard it affects with write-back cache which i will be enabling.

5. anyone who has a similar setup, please advice did you guys use a UPS? i never had a UPS in the previous setup and every time there is a blackout, my raid needs to rebuilt which is damn long and dangerous. so i was wondering will a UPS help, if so, please recommend one suitable for such a setup.

for the case, does anyone know one that has cooling fans in a push pull config for the hdd.

for the OS SSD, is it useful? if not, i just put in a 500GB HDD.

for the case, i have been researching, not much people comment on a case that is good for 5 hdd cooling.

SSD is not useful . A freenas or openfiler only need about 2GB of space . Just get an SD card to SATA get an old 2GB SD card to load it or use a small thumbdrive will do.


As for the casing , just buy a MATX cheap casing

The above board has 10SATA II port good for NAS board .

The above harddisk casing is good when you have an ATX casing with three slot available. Not important to get this unless you like to take harddisk often.

It's about 130SGD,but don't think you can get this price in SLS or in SG.

Mobo I think I get the haswell better cause it's cheaper and also the latest one.

My only real doubt left is the case. I don't know if the sharkoon T28 has enough airflow for 5 hrs. If not then I guess hafx.

If you are using many hdd in the chassis do not use the t28. T28 is good for only 1 hdd usage max 2.

My best idea should be something like those chassis that is in cube form like corsair air 540 or the Cooler master HAF XB. But is quite big. Good airflow. Yet with hot swap hdd function

HAF XB is pretty big for a NAS. I am using an MATX cooler master casing good enough .

why not FD node 304? got 2 fans in front pushing air through the HDDs, and 1 bigger fan at the back sucking it all out... can fit 6x3.5" also (no hot swap though)

Ok recently i have been doin some research of my own to DIY a NAS too. I almost went with the basic consumer parts for my build til i read this which actually made me think twice and totally change my requirements.

Aft reading the article above, i checked ard more and actually alot of ppl also recommended using the proper parts out of their bad experience.

It might not be so easy for u as u have already purchased most if not all the parts. But just take as a info, for future upgrades and for new NAS builders.
