[DIY] Need help with PC Build for Gaming!

Hi All! First timer building PC here. Looking for help to build a gaming pc with budget about 1.5k..

Was told to get i5-6600K, maybe a GTX 1070 Zontac AMP Extreme but not sure if it's worth it or just to get GTX1060 since it is almost half the price?

My budget overall is 1.5k~ approx. Hope someone can suggest a build preferably or help me with this.. but RAM not required.. intending to reuse my old RAM

who told u to get that 6600k? unless u are overclocking, what's the point? unless u telling me u copied the system reqs for bf1 la.

ram we need to know what ram is ur old one. if it's too old, it cannot be reused.

your 1.5k include simi? the rig, accessories, monitor?
and your expectations.
wifi? mainly for what game? graphic settings? size constraints?
does it have to look nice aesthetically?

Haha my bro was the one who told me to get 6600K.. googled and found that it was q up there for gaming too? 1.5k for tower only i doubt monitor.. but probably going to use current mouse.. my RAM is actl bought start of this year 2x4 GBs not sure how to check.. got from those downstairs local shop.

looking to play the more recent games at max res: skyrim, bf1, fallout4 those kind. mainly this is com for my gaming..

not sure what u mean by size constraints but im looking for a mid-tower? aesthetics wise i'm actl looking at the NZXT Phantom series or Cooler Master Master Box 5.

The 1.5k is for the pc rig alone, no accessories or monitors and stuff. Look nice is.. preferable HAHA.

Take photo of the parts, esp the stickers on the parts, den we can google on the parts we, else u can speedy to check but I'm not is this new PC or upgrade(since u want reuse your ram)

pretty much yes if that's the first thing u look at the price lists of most shops.

to ur first question, yes. if i not wrong, it's just tradepac saying that some stuff is on offer and ask u to enquire in shop. i usually ignore this. as a first time builder, tradepac better dun go. look at pcthemes instead.

choosing a mainboard is actually very simple. just get what u need and that's it.

i think the trickiest part about building a rig is... the balance of maximizing ur $$. but ur budget is quite ok. u shld not have a problem with ur choice.

I checked the Price lists and PCthemes has i5s up to 4000+ But I am actl looking towards i5 6600 or 6600K so I switched over to Fuwell. I still have a couple of questions though...

Is there a large difference between the Z97 and Z170 for the motherboard? Also.. Should I get a GTX1070 from Palit at 555 ( Cheapest GTX1070 I could see ) or switch to sth like those of GIGABYTE but a 1060 instead? Is there a large difference between the different types of 1070? Bc initially was looking at the AMP! Extreme 1070 but there's a price difference of almost $200 from the Palit Dual Fan.

For the motherboard I'm looking towards the Asrock Z170 Extreme 4 or Asus Z170-A.. Do you think it would be a good choice? For my case, probably the NZXT Phantom 410 or the Fractal Design R5.. But might go for a cheaper Phantom if it stretches my budget

ok errm first of all... if u dun plan to overclock, there's no point in getting a K cpu. we have explained that to u in earlier posts.

second thing. z97 vs z170 are using difference cpus. one uses the 5th gen haswell while the other ones uses the 6th gen skylake.

and again, if not overclocking, not much use in getting a Z series mobo. mobo choice is about selecting what features u need from your mobo (extra sata ports, usb ports, inbuilt wifi chip, extra pci-e slots and so-on).

gpu choice is straightforward. for someone who just wants 1080p gaming for current AAA games, a gtx 1060 will suffice. but for 1440p, a gtx 1070 and above is required. ignore the brands and ask yourself. what are u looking to achieve with your rig? and a very important question, what is your current monitor or the monitor u hoping to get? u can't possibly hope to game in 1440p with a 1080p monitor right?

and lastly, i am very sure pcthemes has the skylake cpus. u are probably not looking in the right direction.

Z97 vs Z170

1. They are running off different CPU sockets. LGA1150 vs LGA1151.

2. LGA1150 is obsolete and won't support any future processors while LGA1151 will support Skylake through to Cannonlake

3. Z170 got better and more NVMe SSDs support, and more granular overclocking support.

Your CPU is crap by today's Intel standards. AMD Zen Summit Ridge will make your Vishera and latest Excavator based Bristol Ridge processors look old and stupid.

Once Intel Kaby Lake and AMD Zen arrive, you should do an overhaul with either of them. No point reusing or salvage any of your existing parts less SSDs and HDDs.

And please give some respect to TS and create your new own thread. Don't come in hijack and mess up discussion here.

Download CPU-Z and post screenshot of every tabs inside the program.

No point looking at 'futureproofing' to be abke to install new stuffs inside in the future cos if you have never install any additional new stuffs into your current PC, high chance you won't ever install new stuffs into your next new PC.

Actually, the reason I am building this PC atm is bc it is meant to be a personal one for me, whereas the current one I am using is more of a 'family' usage computer for my entire family.
I hope to be able to use the newly built pc for afew years to come so I want to future proof it as well..

I'm not really looking for anything in particular in my mobo which is why I dont really know which to get.. Probably 3-4 SATA Ports and an extra slot for graphics bc I have intentions to upgrade in the future.. Not really looking out for anything else atm.

Also, will be building this PC from scratch now instead of taking parts of the old one as well.

My current PC is also q old alr, an Acer Aspire M3910 ( just checked ) which was back from about 2010, and it actually doesn't belong to me alone which is why I am getting a personal one for myself now

Regarding the K cpu, I thought of getting it because the price difference was not that huge and as I have intentions for q long term usage (~5years or more?) of the pc, I thought might as well.. Also possible that I may overclock it in the future once this rig starts to lose its edge? But I do see where you are coming from and me overclocking is also unlikely so ty for reminding me of that aspect.

I am not really looking for any particular features other than maybe an extra pci-e slot when i add an extra gpu in future to upgrade. As for the issue of the GTX 1070, I checked my monitor and it only goes up to 1080p at 60hz but I have intentions of getting a better monitor next year. I guess I should have mentioned that earlier. Sorry about that.
