hi all,

in reference to this thread (http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/notebook-clinic-77/laptop-recommendations-multi-tasking-5750389.html), i'm also looking to see what is the best desktop option for the below usage. plus monitor and getting someone to fix, budget would be around 2K.

my current desktop is an OEM Acer i5-2320 and while it can do things below, it starts to get really laggy and noisy when i run lightroom.

what i'm gonna use it for is:

1. basic everyday stuffs (surfing, MS office, playing music, email clients etc.)

2. while running all that, also running Adobe Lightroom and sometimes photoshop (i don't do any video editing or rendering)

3. don't really play games on PC but if the price is reasonable, i could have the option to play those common games (Left 4 Dead that kind. not AAA titles though). i have the PS4 Pro for everything else connected to a 4K tv.

4. monitor would be a 27" and above.

really appreciate your recommendations. thanks!

*edit: i now do video editing and rendering.

1. Add more ram

Drop the h270 down to b250 if you aint gonna raid. Not much difference in both in terms of functionality except raid but savings can be there.

You may consider getting a 240/250/275gb ssd. Check lazada mx300 275gb ssd going for $118. A great deal, imo if you know which codes to stack.

For hdd, can consider 2tb if u require more space .

For psu, can consider m12ii evo 520/620w.

Tecware case are quite crap, better off getting phanteks p300 tg at $99 at least.

thanks. considering i know nothing about RAID, i guess i don't need it? thanks for recommending the mx300. will look at the p300

Tecware VOID case ticks all the right boxes and aesthetically wins hands down

Both are int he same category of prie performance
VOID, you can't go wrong coz you are actually paying for the Orbis system amnd a decent case

All in all, whether Phantek P300 or Void will purely be up to personal preference.

Aesthetics wise, VOID is quite chio. But the front fans are way too close to the glass panel. At least for P300, there is still a gap in between to draw air in.

VOID there is a gap, which is sufficient.
Been using VOID as a staple Build
P300 and void i would compare their performance to be the same

BUT, i wouldn't even give a hoot about P300 and void
Still prefer an FTZ01 with all case fans stripped out, then stuck on top of my dry box but under the table. No real estate taken up. :p

TS, video editing and rendering you may want to consider this :

CPU : should be considering a 6-core CPU at a minimum

GFX: For entry-level video editing GPU, we recommend the GTX 1050 or GTX 1050 Ti.

At 4K or above, a GTX 1060 6GB is a good choice.

RAM : 8 GB at the absolute minimum. For 4K, we recommend at least 16 GB. In both cases, more RAM is better

Storage : Video Editing PC does not absolutely need an SSD.
A HDD is fine if you're simply editing H.264 videos at 1080p -- and HDDs can work with even 4K footage if you don't mind some dropped frames.

imho, there is no need for any hdd raid. Any SSD will win a RAID HDD flat in terms of speed.

For Basic 6 core pc, you may want to consider this : https://sg.carousell.com/p/110314139/

thanks for this. for future proof, i'm assuming an i7-8700k is to consider compared to an i5-8600K?

i've pretty much decided on 16GB RAM and for storage, it's easily upgradeable. i'm not much into the diy scene, so i'm reading and looking around for more explanation. bottom line is, for video and photo editing + normal everyday stuffs, for budget wise, is i5-8600K good enough? i'm not a pro at video or photo editing, just a hobby enthusiast so my end product is not for clients or mass viewing etc.

You can consider the Ryzen 5 1600. 6 cores, 12 threads, great for those doing video production and on a budget

1050gtx is the minimum.
Yes price is up due to those using it for bitcoin mining.

ryzen is definitely cheaper. i've done a comparison on lazada for prices. is the ryzen 5 1600 a direct comparison for an i5 or an i7? seems like it's comparable to an i7-8700 based on the cores and threads

hmmm really not a good time to build

Go for ryzen for productivity work. Intel i5 i7 is better for gaming. Due to ryzen coming out with more cores and threads intel tried to step up their game by offering more cores and threads in their new coffeelake 8th generation processor line up. Else without competition from amd, intel would probably still be stuck with 4 cores.

Based on your usage better to go for ryzen build as you are more into productivity work then little to no gaming. Ryzen offers more cores and threads as compare to intel counterpart with similar price range and the benchmarking scores also favours ryzen in terms of productivity work due to the high cores and threads from ryzen.

Their ryzen am4 motherboard also good for upgradability.

Ryzen 5 competes with i5, ryzen 7 competes with i7.

As for gtx 1050 can get it for video rendering work. Not sure if gt 1030 able to cut it for video rendering work but if it does can consider. If compare to higher end cards like 1070, 1080, prices for gtx 1050 already consider not bad already.
