DIY recommendations for multi-tasking

thanks for this. for future proof, i'm assuming an i7-8700k is to consider compared to an i5-8600K?

i've pretty much decided on 16GB RAM and for storage, it's easily upgradeable. i'm not much into the diy scene, so i'm reading and looking around for more explanation. bottom line is, for video and photo editing + normal everyday stuffs, for budget wise, is i5-8600K good enough? i'm not a pro at video or photo editing, just a hobby enthusiast so my end product is not for clients or mass viewing etc.

Unlike the past, now AMD ryzen are cheap,quiet & good...most of the time the core is idling. can't comment on intel cause..there is still hc supporters here. i think zen2 is coming in april if not wrong.

16gb ram is a must....8gb ram..u will see lagging during editing.
256ssd so that u got smooth raw footage load-up/preview. 128 u will be struggling with storage space on primary drive. A lots of us brought super cheap ssd during laz promotion period.
1050 is good enough. if u can afford, get better to speed up the rendering time. i still rem i used 730 and it took 10 mins to render

thanks for recommending that. i'm definitely looking at 256ssd for my primary drive. i see that SSD comes either like a RAM stick or like typical box type HDD. what is the difference? RAM stick types are NVMe which i've read are better in writing speeds.

Nvme on paper is indeed fast.

In real world performance very similar against sata m2 except when dealing with tons of mini files.

thanks. but reason for buying things in stage is because i can save up for the more expensive stuffs. i think i'm gonna go with the CPU+Mobo first.

sorry but where did you see it? isn't that the pro version? i crossed checked the model number and it says nothing about 7200rpm.

need some clarification about M.2 SSD. planning to either get the 500GB M.2 or the Evo 850 500GB.

for the M.2, the installation is simple just slot it in to my planned MOBO and that's it right? i saw using pcpartpicket that there's this note saying 'The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports. When the M.2 slot is populated with a PCIe-based M.2 drive, two SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports are disabled.'

what does this mean? since the evo 960 m.2 500gb is not a PCIe interface, it's not applicable right? since it's an M.2

M.2 is a physical layout. Sata and pcie refers to the interface. The bandwidth for that m2 slot is shared with the sata ports. If you plugged a pcie based m2 ssd, it will render 2 sata ports unusable.

Most mainstream mobo chipsets have limited pcie lanes. Perhaps you might want to look at threadripper x399 or intel hedt x299 for more pcie lanes.

nah u should not have any issues. but u just need to read the board manual to find the right sata port for your hdd.

next for the speed of the hdd. i think it might switch between 5400rom to 7200rpm depends on usage. not really sure of how their multi tier caching works.

thanks. so based on what i understand and gathered, if i'm using the 960 EVO NVMe M.2, since the interface is PCIe 3.0 x4, NVMe 1.2, i can't use ASATA3 slots 0 and 1?

need some advice here. i'm looking at the evo 860 m.2 500GB SATA version (since it's cheaper vs. evo 960) for the mobo i'm buying which is GA-AB350-Gaming-3 but from userbenchmark.com, it says incompatible.

i cannot use m.2 500GB SATA but must use m.2 NVMe PCIe version which is the evo 960?

those using tecware void, is there no way of putting an optical drive? is USB optical drive the way to go now?
