Hi Experts..

Need some help on my diy rig which i build some years ago..
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3P
Graphic: X1950 PRO PCI-E
RAM: KVR667D2N5/1G

Currently the Rig is down..i believe is mobo having issue which resulting in the whole system cant power up.

Any expert here can advise me,
1.if i still want to keep the graphic card, which mobo in the mkt can still support it?
2. I'm thinking of changing the mobo n RAM, any advise?
Daily usage to do some office works and watch movies only. Maybe a I5 processor and DDR3 16G?
PLs help...
TIA!

You don't even need an i5 and 16gb for web surf and movies . What you need is an SSD.

Unless you are doing some professional works. As for the GPU must check which board supports AGP rather than pcie.

It may be more cost effective to build a new rig. With a new mobo, you'll need new processor, new rams. Get a mobo with build in video 1st. It'll be sufficient for you to do office work and watch movie. Also looking at your current rig problem, it could be the PSU is faulty, so you might as well get a new PSU. Add in a SSD, and you'll have a complete new rig.

  1. Go to Sim Lim Square, #05-18.
  2. Pass them this slip.
  3. Pay $262.
  4. Problem settled. :)

I disagree to this proposal for the following reasons:

1)Nobody currently sell much in the way of Ivy Bridge CPUs or motherboards and it is highly likely that the shop in question will be unable to cough up the goods.

2) That HD5450 is so ancient, Intel HD4000 iGPUs are actually superior to the GPU. TS can save some money by not even buying this GPU.

3) The shop may give TS a junk grade PSU that may damage his system in various ways. The list never says what PSU you will get which makes the Headway 500W a likely candidate.

Hence, there is a reason why store rig packages are never recommended and buyers are advised to customise their own rig instead of buying something off the shelf.

Could be a dead PSU. Try doing the PSU paper clip test to determine if the PSU is dead.

True.

And also partly they do not have stocks for the mobo and a 5450. The lowest i saw at their shelves was a 7730.

i3-4130 + Asrock h81m hds ~ $207
Crucial 4gb ddr3 ~ $51
Plextor m6s 128gb ssd ~ $104
Fsp oem 300w ~ $39

$477 buy and DIY @ tradepac ask for discount. If u not sure how to DIY can bring to gs shop ask him help u assemble @ a fee.

If budget is tight can consider use *ahem* OS or buy online @ g2a which is pretty cheap for win8.1 ~

Keep ur gfx as a antique instead of using it ~

Points taken from everybody. I agree that the standard PC systems offered by SLS shops are c-r-a-p. But since TS was asking for an easy recommendation, that was just a baseline configuration that he can tweak and improve.

He certainly doesn't need i5 or even i3 or 16GB ram for office work and web browsing. Modern integrated graphics may also do the tricks.

Anyway, I got it out from price list. Outdated or not (availability of Ivy Bridge vs Haswell), I'm not sure. But definitely not my intention to mislead TS. Just dun wish him to overspend on overly-powerful stuffs he doesn't need.

For enthusiasts and savvy DIY-ers here who know their stuffs, certainly the standard PC systems are a joke. These systems are certainly not the best or value-for-money, but easiest to order one like a set meal in a restaurant. :)

Thanks all for the advise...seems like my graphic card can't be reuse??

See that all bro advise is to go for Asrock. What'd reason behind to choose this mobo?

If I play some games like CM and fifa are the recomd still valid?

ASRock is a fine mobo. It is good enough for your needs as your stuffs you use or play just requires a basic entry level mobo and probably an entry level GPU.

Your GPU is using an AGP connector. Its different from pcie technology. Do a quick google and found out that it won't work together. Sad to say you can put the GPU to rest.

If you are intending to play those games mentioned. You can just get a 7750 1gb by powercolor for $128.

I believe TS mentioned his GPU is X1950 PRO PCI-E. That should be a PCI-E x16 card, so still useable. But it is an old GPU, I see no point to continue to use it with the new mobo and processor.
