Hi guys my pc has the following specs:

Q9300
Gigabyte P35-DS3
2GB corsair ram
8800gt
Corsair HX 620W

I want to play newer games like farcry4, gta5 and batman arkham knight on high settings on my 22" 1680x1050 TN panel(lol), but I'm pretty sure my graphics card is way past its prime so I'm wondering which modern card I should upgrade to.

Been out of the loop for a few years now, would really appreciate the advice from professionals here. Thanks bros.

Your specs looks old.

Keep the PSU and casing, change everything else. What is your budget?

Overhaul everything bro? That bad lol. Um initially I thought can just plug in a newer card so I was prepared to spend maybe $300~? Well I really want to play the new games so, lets say my budget $1200, what can I get with that? Can exclude keyboard, mouse, monitor, case (Antec900), speaker.

Thanks alot bros.

On a side note, I'm looking at the GTX750Ti. Is this card compatible with my motherboard? I think my motherboard is PCI-E 2 card slot..

Your system can last you another 5 yrs min. To get best performance for your LGA775 mobo, try overclock it to 3.5GHz , add a total of 8MB DDR2 RAM, gtx750ti is good and consider get a USB3.0 card for new hard drive support

I'd love to overclock my cpu but it's a bad overclocker because of its very low multiplier I think. Besides I'm using intel stock cooler which is a piece of sh!t and I highly doubt shops carry lga775 coolers nowadays:(

Intel make a mistake and lost million of dollars by making LGA775 cpu last more than 10yrs min.

your CPU is good for overclock up to 3.6GHz but consider getting Cooler Master: Hyper 212 EVO.
just follow the bios settings below

think heatsink cost $60 not including thermal paste.
don't upgrade anything higher than gtx750 you should be fine.
kingston RAM price drop alot but you can grab some 2nd hand from marketplace if you want.

Your CPU is quite decent even without overclocking. The 212 evo is a good idea since you can move it to a new rig when you upgrade eventually.

The things you need to upgrade are -

(1) 2GB of RAM is too little. Assuming you are using 2X1 GB, you can pick up another 2X1 GB or go for 2X2 GB Should be quite cheap.

(2) New graphics card (depends on your budget)

(3) SSD (really helps but optional)

The last 2 items can also be moved over to a new rig when you upgrade.

TS is still using SATA2 and yet you recommend him SSD ??
his mobo don't know whether got the AHCI drivers or not.?? no ??

1) Do you intend to just spend $300+ on a new GPU, or are you open to more upgrades to some of your parts? (Full overhaul not included.)

2) State model of casing that you are using.

I just want to say thanks for all the help so far.

Definitely open to more upgrades or if need be, a full overhaul. Ideally, an upgrade to just the graphics card would be fine but I understand that given the outdated components on my pc that would probably be unlikely. I have a budget of $1200 to work with, but of course spending less than that amount would be good.

My case is an Antec 900.

Some questions though:

Now still can get ddr2 memory at simlim sq?

Can I install ssd on my mobo (It's a gigabyte p35-ds3)

Let's say I get a gtx750ti will my motherboard pci-e slot throttle the performance?

From Tom's Hardware -
"So, here's the thing. Yes, there are clear cases, particularly if you're a power user, where owning a motherboard with 6 Gb/s is going to allow your 6 Gb/s-capable SSD to shine. However, if a friend were to ask us if he should hold off on an SSD purchase until he could upgrade his old Core 2 machine to something newer with 6 Gb/s connectivity, we'd say no. For someone using a hard drive today, a fast SSD (even one artificially hobbled by a 3 Gb/s port) will yield massive and immediate gains in nearly every aspect of computing. "

since you are getting a new gpu, try to get a new monitor which at least support hd.

i dun see much point when you are spending money on gpu to play good graphic game which the display itself throttle the output.

1) Yes, you can get DDR2 RAMs at SLS. About $20+ per GB.

2) Yes, you can. SATA techonology is reverse compatible, you can plug a SATA 3 SSD into a SATA 2 port and it will still work, just that it will be slower. Even if your mobo has no ACHI, can also run in IDE mode, also just that your SSD will run slower. However, HDDs are so slow, even a SSD that is using a SATA 2 port and running in IDE mode will still be a whole lot faster than a HDD, hence a SSD is a worthwhile investment.

3) Nonsense. Even though your motherboard has a first gen PCI-E X16 slot, it is roughly equivalent to a modern PCI-E 3.0 X4/PCI-E 2.0 X8 slot in terms of bandwidth and you are going to lose about 2-3FPS at most when using a top end GPU, let alone a GTX 750Ti. Just get the best card your $$$ can afford. Read these articles to learn more.

PCIe: A Brief Technology Primer On PCI Express - The Myths Of Graphics Card Performance: Debunked, Part 2
GeForce GTX 980 PCI-Express Scaling | techPowerUp

4) However, your CPU is a bit old and is about comparable to say, a modern AMD FX-4100. This does means that you may get an approximately 30FPS penalty when playing modern games at max settings when compared to a modern i5 4460. However, this can still be covered up with a powerful GPU as games tend to be more demanding on the GPU than on the CPU. Hope you do not mind playing your games at Medium-High settings in 1680X1050, though.

Suggested upgrade parts:

GPU: Sapphire R9 280 3GB Dual-X (285) (lazada.com)
SSD: Crucial MX100 256GB (154)
RAM: Kingston PC2-6400/800 (2GB) (43)

Total Cost: $482

Unless otherwise stated, buy at Tradepac, #05-18, and ask for discounts. DIY yourself. If you can't into DIY, go to PC Care & Solutions, #02-32, SLS, and ask Nigel to assemble for you for a fee.

Notes:

1) The R9 280 will be able to play the games on your wish list on Medium-High settings in 1680X1050. Can try High, but better to switch off the AA, though.

2) Not so sure how much RAM you want to add. Ideally, 8GB is the optimum amount of RAM for playing AAA games, but since DDR2 RAMs are relatively expensive, 4GB should be just enough. Can get yourself 8GB of RAMs if you want. (Oh, I forgot to ask, is your OS a 64-bit OS?)

3) Got Mastercard? Consider buying the GPU and SSD from lazada.com on a Monday and get 10% discounts when you pay with a Mastercard. Do note that discounts are capped at $50 and you may want to buy these items seperately.

I think that's a fair point but if I were to go with a gtx750ti wouldn't it just be enough to power games at max settings on a 1680x1050 monitor? Any higher resolution and I'd probably have to tone down the settings.

i just google for you cos it's xmas time
microsoft recommend you apply this fix b4 upgrade from SATA to SSD. It has all the SSD drivers for your motherboard Gigabyte P35-DS3

Error message occurs after you change the SATA mode of the boot drive

TS, before you actually decide on a GPU, you may wish to read up on the GPU benchmarks in Far Cry 4.

Far Cry 4 Benchmarked: Graphics & CPU Performance > Benchmark: 1680x1050 - TechSpot

Do note that these benchmark tests were done with an i7-4770K and when considering the age of your Q9300, it would be prudent to subtract about 20-30 FPS to simulate using a Q9300 with these GPUs.

GTA V and Batman: Arkham Knight are both not released yet and may potentially be more demanding than Far Cry 4 in terms of hardware requirements.
