I had read this page few times. I can't find the usb-storage.ko for firmware 1.06.
I had upgrade to 1.06 from 1.05.
usb-storage.ko is 3rd party app that cannot be found in d-link firmware

i suggest that you do not embark on doing it because you don't even know how to telnet and thus risk damaging ur external harddisk and your dns-323

1)
1.1) Back up your current hard disk on the DNS-323
1.2) Add your new 1TB and format
1.3) Copy your backed up data if the hard disk is accidentally formatted

OR

2)
2.1) Remove your current hard disk in the DNS-323
2.2) Add your new 1TB hard disk in the other bay and format
2.3) Plug in your old hard disk
2.4) If webui prompts for a format of hard disk, click on skip and you should still be able to access both Volume_1 and Volume_2

Thanks shadowandy :)

I agree. While I applaud you for checking out all the information on Bit Torrent, Telnet, USB HDD mounting etc. you need you be careful lest you brick your DNS-323 and lose data.

Built-in Bit Torrent still ok, the rest will not be covered by your warranty.

Thanks especially to Shadowandy and krazyman.
I managed to funplug, telnet and finally connect my WD My passport to my DNS 323. Now transferring the file, faster compare to transfer over my WRT54G2. Planning to buy DIR 855 soon.
The next step is to learn how to do the bit torrent and file transfer over the internet.
Which bit torrent is good ? How to use the original bit torrent ?
Thanks.
I'm reading up about the linux platform. Learning new thing everyday. :D

I plan to run a raid1 (mirror). Is it possible to recover data simply just by unplugging any one of the mirrored hard disk from the nas and connecting it directly to a pc?

Yes. I try already.
The dns 323 auto restart after I press but when I log into the web and press the download instead of the configuration. Then I press the bit torrent. It said I haven't install. :o

Guys,

I have some queries on which BT client to use on DNS 323.

I am running transmission but it does not have IP block list feature (equal to peer guardian) hence i am thinking of uninstalling it, can you guys tell me if ML Donkey is good for BT? small footprint like Transmission?

No one can advise my above query?

Got another qns... 2 x DNS-323 should be able to exist on the same network right with different host name? But I just wanna be sure so I ask if there's any issues?

I'm newbie also know that the hard disk cannot plug directly to the pc without do something.
The NAS 323 using different format system.
You need to have software to view the content from the hard disk.

You are right on this.

DNS-323 is using ext2 or ext3 file system. Windows based machine normally need a ext2/3fs driver in order to read the contents.

Just ensure they have different host name and different IP addresses. If both DNS-323 are configured to be on DHCP then you should not face problems.

Thanks for the heads up!

I see. DNS-323 is running of linux file system. I got zero knowledge on NAS and Linux. My main concern is when the DNS-323 becomes faulty or needs to be replaced somewhere down the road, I can simply plug one of the raid1 pair to a windows based system to read the data.

A windows based raid1 pair can be simply unplug and read separately. So I assume Linux ext2/3 fs raid1 can also do the same so long as one of the windows based ext2/3 drivers is installed?

In the event of a failed DNS-323

Hi guys,
pretty new to NAS.
Sorry to ask again if it has been posted before, I tried to search but this topic has grown over 100+ pages and I might have missed it.
I want to have a centre backup of all my files (mainly digital photos and currently struggling with a few portable HDD)
My question is.

1) If the enclosure is not working, how do you retrieve your data on the HDD as I do not have a linux OS machine.
2) Can the data be read if the HDD is installed onto another brand of enclosure or must use back DNS-323?
3) Do you connect a UPS to DNS-323? What happens if you experienced a power trip on the circuit breaker, did you experienced data loss on the HDD?

1) ext2/3fs driver
2) Most probably DNS-323. But I tested migrating hard disk to DNS-343 and it works
3) 1.06 has got UPS monitoring (through its usb port) if i remember correctly. I think the DNS-323 will initiate a shutdown if UPS is low on power.
