The errors might not result in data corruption as the system will ask for the resend of the particular packet.

Movie watching is time sensitive, if packets get resend too often, the player cannot play the next segment of the movie resulting in freezing/stuttering of movies.

Yup I'm aware, jus to say state it in case people ask. Ha ha

Anyone using Dns 323 connected to WRT54G router? How is the speed like transfering files?
I know it isnt a gigabit router, thus wondering is it slow for transfer?

So you are aware that high error rate will cause problem to time sensitive applications? Then you should try to find the cause of all those errors. If you have changed your hardware at the respective brand's service center, then you got to look at your wireless landscape at home. Other equipments in your house might be causing all these problem and not the hardware (DIR-655, DNS-323)

I have done a simple speed test for the DNS-323 on a simple gigabit environment (link). The throughput is in excess of 100mbps.

I've used a D-Link switch to step down the transfer to 100mbps before and I managed to get 96.83mbps (link). Assuming WRT54G is performing at the rated speed of 100mbps. You should be to hit 90+mbps too, that is if the switching capacity of the WRT54G is as good as the D-Link product I used.

hmm thanks for the reply. but let's say with just only the wrt54g router by itself with no switches or anything. how's the transfer speed like?

assuming that wrt54g performs, the speed is still maxed at 100mbps cos wrt54g is oni capable of 100mbps wired

Hi all,

I'm having this weird problem when i try to log into the downloads page of the DNS323 web interface (i'm using firmware 1.05 with the torrent client). Whenever i click the "download" button, it just throws me back onto the login page. I can still go to the config page fine, and access the drives etc etc.... but can't manage downloads!! (which i think are still ongoing since the traffic and hdd lights still blink). Anybody encountered this before??

Hi All, Can Some One Fix NAS For A Fee?

Hi,

First Of All, I Know Nuts About Networking, So Terms Like Linux, Raid, Ftp, Etc.. Are Extremely Foreign To Me.

Is There Any Freelancer Out There That Could help Me Set Up A New Network Storage?

My Current Configuration Are As Follows;

Laptop - ACER 4920 (Windows Vista)
Wireless Modem Cum Router - Motorola SBG1000 (Wireless)
Network Printer - Brother 9420CN MFC (Connected Via RJ45)
Avg Download Speed Tested @ Speednet / Download 5000+ KBPS / Upload 1000 KPBS

What I Need

1) Freelancer To Check If My Current Modem Is Slowing Down Or Even Getting The Maximum Possible Speed Supported By Maxonline (Mine Premium Plan), If Yes I Am Looking To Change It.

2) Set Up Of Wireless Network Storage, In This Case I Haven't Thought Of Which Particular Brand/Model. But Guessed Most Propbably To be DNS 323. The Network Storage Must Allow Me To SAVE / BACKUP @ Highest Possible Speed + Either Me Or My Frens Must be Able To Gain Access To The Files From Another Location (Thru Web Or Other Methods). For My Own Access, I Shall Be Able To Gain Full Access, As For My Frens Of Invited Ppl, They Can Only Gain Access To Pre Allocated File Or Folders (Not All).

3) This New Setup Shall Preferably Not Hamper Or Slowdown My Current Internet Connections Or Link To My Network MFC Printer.

4) Freelancer To Help To Fine Tune My Network (Internet Options, Firewall Settings Etc...) In Shall A Way That Has A Nice Balance Of Speed, At The Same Time Offering Security Protection. Currently I Am Quite Lost As I don't Know If I Should Use Vista OR Norton 360 OR Wireless Modem Firewall (Motorola SBG1000).

5) Maybe Help Set My MFC Printer In Such A Way That Any Incoming Normal or Pc Fax Can Be Stored As An Image File Like JPG Or PDF In The Network Storage (So That I Can Access It If I Am Not @ Home).

6) Or Any Scripting Involvement (I Don't Know)

Kindly Call Me @ 9-1-0-9-8-9-0-1 to Discuss The Fees Chargeable.

Regards,

Lost In The Wires

I noticed that the review on this site --> link showed that write and read performance on a 1Gbps LAN is in the region of 10+ MB/s. Is this considered slow? Is this expected ? Or am I missing something? Hard drive throughput usually in the region of 60-100 MB/s. 1Gbps LAN theoretically means 125 MB/s transfer rate. So where is the bottleneck that is dropping the transfer rate to 10+ MB/s ???

I'm considering this NAS due to cost reasons, but need to clarify on the speed thing. Actually I just need a raid box, and some enclosures out there with eSata connection or FW800 connection can easily give 60-70 MB/s transfer rate. Of course NAS is more than just storage but transfer speed is important to me. Hope someone can clarify.

If transfer speed is more important, go eSATA. The DNS-323 is about 16-20 MB/s and it is one of the better ones at this price range.

Hi sigh,

Initially I thought that gigabit ethernet NAS transfer rate is determined by the speed of the spinning HD since 1Gbps (125MB/s) is above the transfer rate of most HD (60-80 MB/s). But looks like it's not so simple as apparently there are overheads and bottlenecks somewhere that yielded a result of 16-20 MB/s only for this NAS. This being the case, I agree a good eSata or FW800 enclosure will be a better choice for speed.

Yes, a NAS is a like computer with a simple OS dedicated to storage. There're the constraints. I used the following site to check them out http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/component/option,com_nas/Itemid,190

You can see that high end NAS is able to hit 70MB/s. But the price.....

If you are thinking top speeds:
SATA2 - 3GB/s
GE - 125MB/s
Just as you cannot get a HDD to transfer at 3GB/s, you cannot get a GE Switch to transfer at 125MB/s

16-20 mb/sec for transfering files? Using a normal router like WRT54G?

WRT54G is only FE. You're lucky if you can hit 11MB/s via cable connection. If you are connecting wirelessly, I would think 3MB/s is tops.

Omg. If i connect the dns to my router, which means going wireless. That means the transfer rate is only 3mb/sec? That's super duper slow. Can anyone else verify this?

For my case, it's 1.6MB/s over wireless-G.
Guess the speed should be whatever you are currently getting when transferring files between two systems via wifi?
