i also got samsung tat run for few years... without problem..

WD and hitachi i also encounter problem before...

all got their fair share of problem :s13:
Yeah, Agree with you :D
And my bad, Hitachi I am referring to is 7200 RPM, but not sure if it has NCQ (they say it might prolong the lifespan of a HDD by doing less checks and spin when checking data).

Isn't NCQ the sata controller's function rather than the HDD.

You can perserve the life span of your HDD by keeping the default file system as EXT2 instead of the newer EXT3 because the latter will be performing journaling every now and then making the HDD work extra hard. This is harmful especially for WD Greens where the max load cycle count is critically low as the smart data suggest.

For stability reason better avoid using WD EARS which use advanced format much to the dislike of DNS box

Just to check with u guys. I wanna port my 323 mirrored 2 pieces of 1TB into 343 without lossing any data. Any way to do it, without copying the data out as i dont have anymore space. In my other drives.

Ahh.. you are right, I didnt know that, now I know, thanks for the correction :)
I always thought that was embedded in the HDD itself.

And thanks for the advice - will take note of it :)

So the question is: DNS-323 has NCQ?

newer mainstream Linux kernels support AHCI natively.
I'm not sure but maybe DNS experts can come in and advice if the chipset in DNS is the newer one that has AHCI.

hi guys just bought the f4 2tb
not sure how to format this 4k drive ..

looked up online at one source

Run fdisk with the -u parameter to partition the drive and select 64 as the starting block (instead of default 63). Then, use the -b parameter in mkfs to specify 4096 block sizes: mkfs -t ext3 -b 4096 /dev/sda1

what that means ?

.... your source is QNAP NAS....

this thread is DLink's DNS-323 NAS.

Two very different brands.....

I'm using DNS-320 with Samsung F4 x 2... it using the 4k sector. should be fine.
There might be a performance hit accordingly to source but still monitoring.

1)fdisk -u /dev/sdb
(or watever the device name is )
2)First sector (63-3907029167, default 63): 64
(after adding new partition)
3) write new partition table
4)mke2fs -j -m 0 -T largefile4 /dev/sdb2

In this case the user partition a swap at sdb1 ..
not sure why ..

Anyways partition with my desktop .. and no didnt take me half a day ...
hopefully its stable and doesnt slow down in read/write speeds that i've been reading about ..

You should recreate the swap (/dev/sdb1), change it to type 82 (swap) and turn swap on (swapon /dev/sdb1).

In fact you can partition the disk using the dns-323 (with fun_plug). Just that you wont be able to partition the first disk cos fun_plug is running off it. You can always partition disk 2. After it is done, swap the disk around and load fun_plug in. Then format the disk 2 (which is disk 1 originally).

Run hd_verify write to force the dns-323 to recognize the disks.

EDIT: found the problem, needed to set the network access to the new drive, and all is well now.

Hi All,

I just put in a new 1.5TB HDD into my DNS323, followed shadowandy's advice of pulling out my existing HDD (which was plugged into the left bay) and put in the new HDD into the right side bay and formatted the drive.

When I replaced my old HDD back into the left side bay and started everything all was well EXCEPT that my old HDD is now Volume_2-1 instead of Volume_1-1 and I lost transmission functionality and putty. Ploughed thru some of the thread and found someone suggested swapping the drives around. Did that and all was good again, i.e. got back transmission and putty.

My problem now is that I cannot see the new Volume_2-1 in windows. Only Volume_1-1 shows up my old HDD. In putty (telnet) I can see mnt/HD_b2 (the new HDD), and was able to create a dir in it. How come I cannot see it in windows. Can someone point me the way please. Oh by the way I am NOT setting the HDDs as RAID 0 or 1, just want to used them as 2 separate drives i.e. Volume 1 and 2 for more storage.

TIA
