Do i need a powerful GPU for my needs?

Not a FPS player except for the occasional CS:GO.

Mainly playing RTS like ANNO, Total War, civilisation and 3rd person games like RE2, Yakuza, Deus Ex etc. Enjoy the pretty screens and many moving stuffs.

Do i need a powerful GPU to do this? Thinking of getting a laptop for work/play while on long overseas trip. Cant make up my mind if i should go for a powerful and expensive GPU. CPU is probably the i7-8750H

U probably need a mid range GPU for that.

If you are looking at 1440p or above resolution and 144hz you probably want at least a GTX 1070 and above.

It all depends on your wants and budget.

Thanks for the quick reply. I had a look at the available laptops now, seems to be just FHD and 144Hz. I dont think i ever need to go that high FPS since i getting old....fingers cannot react and brain cannot compute that fast anymore.

Why GTX 1070? I see the newer RTX models are out in stores...but a bit more expensive. The Scar 2 looks good but i worry about thermals.

gfx is usually a want rather than a need, unless u work as a 3D artist or game developer

RTX's only difference is in the ray tracing capabilities. if u don't mind turning off the ray tracing, u can save quite a bit of $$ and buy the GTX ones. U can consider looking at the newly launched GTX1660

Most thin and light laptops have managed to get their thermals under control either by using good cooling or max-q solutions for the GPU.

I think you can consider looking at a RTX2060 thin and light similar to the Aftershock Slate 15 or Razer 15 etc if portability is going to be a concern.

budget? buying gtx 1060/ gtx 1050ti is good enough for CS:GO..ensure it is ips since you mentioned pretty screens...deus Ex i think quite demanding even for 1060 laptop.

But do not buy 1060 laptop if there is no price drop...buy around 1800ish is acceptable.

Laptops? You need top tier ones to power some of the games listed in their full glory... The absolute highest tier and budget overload is needed if you plan to avoid heavy gaming laptop( painful to carry around) for the Max-Q version.

Otherwise, if you can accept lowering to medium/high settings@1080p for some of the game, bare minimum is a GTX 1060 MAX-Q laptop... Get the model that's paired with the most powerful CPU to handle games like civilization and total war. 1060 MQ, 1060, 1070 MQ, 1070...

For 4K laptops, you need to buy the highest model...

Avoid RTX laptops...

Price to performance, the rtx series atm is taking a one step back in the way how they copy performance progression with respect to desktop as compared to the pascal line. Kinda like the maxwell and earlier era, where 970M is seriously weaker(30~40%) than 970 whereas the 1060 laptop is only very slightly weaker(5~10%) than the desktop counterpart.

You are just paying a SUPER premium to buy the "RTX" brand on a laptop. Doubt you'll use RTX in your games due to serious performance degradation, DLSS is crap too(you might as well do upsampling, works on non RTX cards as well, manually and get better results)

Go watch dave2d reviews on rtx laptops. He explain it well. Rtx laptops is overprice not worth the price. Better to buy laptops with pascal gpus more value for money. Buy rtx laptops if you want to be guinea pig and beta tester for nvidia to use their ray tracing and dlss features. The most affordable and mobile GPU for you will be the RTX 2060. However, you pay significant RTX premium for something that does not perform as well as the desktop version, which makes it even less capable when it comes to RT and DLSS. DLSS is supposed to improve performance, but since it requires some VRAM from my understanding, that leaves the GPU with even less resources from its limited 6GB. So you can still take the call to see if you would like a flashy new GPU or an older GTX GPU since it is still available currently.

Are you comfortable to lug a laptop that is near 3kg.
Else I suggest for laptop just get a decent Intel U series with MX150
if not the weight will kill you.

Game when you are back would be a better option.

I have to lug 2 laptops on the go.... One for work, the other a personal one that doubles as a backup for work. This personal one usually is in the hotel room, only once in awhile during critical moments that I bring to work site. Maybe only during flights and to+fro work that I carry both around.

Gaming at home is definitely best option, but I am only at home about 15-20% of the time. The rest I am overseas.....

He can go for aftershock mx 15 pro, 16.1inch 144hz screen for 1.7k liddat with gtx 1060 (6gb) and also fingerprint sensor with rgb keyboard and it show is coming up at march , so look for some goooooooood deals there hahaha, just note that mx15 pro the cooling fan blow out from the back and right side, so if your right handed it might be a problem

Looking at the prices and specs between gtx and rtx version.

Send like the manufacture knew that rtx is not a good value.... Most toy around with storage to give a perceived better value

Get a laptop with thunderbolt 3. If u want to game, attach a tb3 enclosure with gpu of your choice inside. After gaming, can disconnect the enclosure and keep elsewhere.

Hardcore, I don't dare to bring my Dell G7 overseas due to back problems.
