Do I need Gsync?

It's about time to upgrade my entire set up and I'll be upgrading my peripherals first and upgrade the pc itself closer to the end of the year when the new 20XX series graphics cards come out.

I'm now looking at upgrading my monitor. I'm currently using a 27" 1080p 60Hz monitor and would like to upgrade to a 32"/24" 1440p one. I'd like to have a blue light filter feature as well to protect my eyes :s13:

The use of my pc is to play mainly MMORPGs - I currently play FF14 and I have been a long time WOW player (though I stopped playing it for awhile, I've stopped and gone back to it several times since 2004). I may on and off play other RPGs like the Diablo series or RTS/MOBA games like SC2/HOTS... but those are rare. I hardly, if ever, play FPS games.

I also use the pc to edit photos and videos perhaps once every couple of weeks.

I hope for this new monitor to last me at least 5 years, but I don't see my usage pattern changing significantly over this period of time.

What I'm unsure about is the frame rate of the monitor and whether or not I need to get a monitor with Gsync capabilities. Based on the above mentioned usage, would I need to get a high fps monitor with Gsync? Or is it good enough for me to get a 60 fps monitor without Gsync. The difference in cost is huge between the 2.

Thanks in advance!

With your current gaming setup, do you notice tearing?
Do you use Vsync for your games?

Do you wish to experience high refresh rate gaming?

If you notice tearing and doesn't like it, yes, G-Sync will solve the issue. If you don't notice tearing, then no point la.

If you use Vsync and sync frame rate with refresh rate at 60fps, then there will be no tearing to worry about.

If you wish to have high refresh rate, then get a 144Hz monitor. Doesn't matter G-Sync or not. Usually G-Sync make games look smooth below certain FPS, mainly below 60. I feel no difference between normal and G-Sync once FPS is above 80. I can't tell the difference but thats my personal experience.

If you have to compromise your other upgrade to factor in budget for G-Sync monitor, then its not worth to get it. Rather buy a better GPU and non G-Sync monitor.

Hope that helps you abit on deciding if you wish to get.

Thanks for your advice! I'm not sure if I use vsync or not, but I didn't deliberately enable it in any of my games. I guess I'm not sensitive enough to notice tearing in the games I play or maybe because I don't play high speed fps games, though for higher demand situations (e.g. server overload in highly populated areas in WoW) where my frame rate drops really low I do notice some "lag" in frames (I think that's called stuttering?). If I get a 100-144Hz monitor and my frame rate doesn't hit so high, would vsync help or would I get perpetual problems since my frame rate is below the refresh rate?

Sorry for having so many questions, I haven't really kept up with monitor technology so I don't really understand all these.

To be honest, if you are asking this question, you probably do not need it.

Nope.

If you are gaming above 60hz and 60fps u don't need GSync at all.

Firstly, for WoW and FFXIV, the games are CPU dependent. They usually depends heavily on one core. So the dips/strutter you're seeing are either caused by CPU bottleneck or loading from HDD.

Second, the games you have mentioned can easily run 100+fps with modern GPUs. if you plan to upgrade to 20XX series, I am sure they will run better (depends on CPU too of course)

I think G-Sync is like minister's pay. It is over priced, good excuse to have, but not necessary at all. normal monitors works too.

Sorry, don’t think that’s true unless you are talking about a situation where his in-game frame rate is always above 60 but his monitor is only 60 Hz , in which case just activate Vsync.

Thank you all for your advice! I will go with a high fps monitor without gsync :)

The no.1 reason to get gsync is not for high refresh rates ( contrary to popular belief ) but for adaptive refresh rates in order to reduce input lag.

Even you are able to get your game to output minimum 60fps at worst case scenarios, there will still be times throughout the game where the fps will fluctuate between 60 to whatever is the maximum.

This is where gysnc or amd freesync comes in handy and refreshes the graphics ouput from your gfx card to match your FPS in real time.

I thought the no. 1 reason was to eliminate tearing.

The adaptive refresh rate will help to eliminate that problem too. But for competitive gaming, they are less concerned about tearing than input lag.

I am using one.

Good choice. Go for it. Loving the Ultrawide stuff like games and movie content.

Some games do not support Ultrawide so you'll be seeing a 27" area with black bars beside but it is still 2560*1440.
