All things happened due to conditions; there's no certainty in 'bad things' experienced and perceived now would be followed by 'good things' - 'bad' could turn better or become worse, likewise for 'good' stuff.

Best is not to get too attached to the past nor anticipate too much for the future. Just do your best at the present moment and see the results unfold. Ultimately, good/bad and happiness/sadness are impermanent.

Last time I thought I would start practising the Dharma when I'm old. Till I heard a Shifu said practise the Dharma when you are well and good. If wait till bad things happen (negative karmic seeds ripen), it will be too late. Luckily I heed the Shifu's advice.

but then for some things you need to make a decision to initiate a change yourself

like if a bad partner, a bad job, a bad habit etc

If keep staying in it, you know it might not change

Sometimes it's perception.

When one bad thing happened you tend to be more sensitive to other bad things, big or small, or see most things as bad.

Sometimes it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

When one bad thing happened you become negative/ don't sleep enough/ don't eat well/ whole day face black black (or green green, if scared/ worried) then more mistakes/ accidents/ health issues/ interpersonal issues may happen.

So what I normally do is when something bad happen I try to settle/ salvage as best as I could then will put it down/ walk away and stop thinking about it or make some changes as some here suggest or take a break... so that I don't spiral downwards, whether perceived or real.

It is a test of your resolve when bad things come. It is a test of your restrain when good things come. Dwell in neither of those, cos they come and go. Be blessed that you have constant reminders. Some ppl only have one test in their life and they failed badly.
