Do you think MS and Sony saved AMD's future? Cause AMD is dying already. CPUs cannot compete with Intel and GPU is facing stiff competition.

but with Xbox and PS4, both companies really give AMD a lifeline and even possibly turn AMDs fortune around.

Since console games and PC games are closely related (PC versions exist in console and vice versa), having AMD CPU/GPU means its way alot easier to make games for both PC and console since hardware is similar.

This also give AMD and edge over Intel and even Nvidia as games will now be optimised for AMD hardware (due to the console hardware).

I am sure this will also AMD to better design their future GPU/CPU for games.

If AMD could manage and execute their plans well for the next few years, I feel things could really look good for them.

Not only that. I'm sure I wouldnt want my console to have a gtx card with $600 inside. Console cannot be expensive. Or else very hard to market.

Lol, hopefully not. Monopoly is bad for end users.

But I can still remember pple questioning AMDs decision to buy ATI at 5.6 billion (crazy price considering AMD's financial position).

But then, it turns out that the decision actually saved the company later and now AMD is able to design and make APUs because of ATI.

I think AMD likely won't make much money out of supplying the chips to MS and Sony. I reckon the margin is gonna be very lean.

However, this gives AMD an edge in terms of optimization. To be honest, I think AMD's GPUs are not doing that bad, but they still need to buck up on their CPU, which is lagging very badly in terms of performance against Intel. Optimization can do wonders, but not likely to suddenly give them an edge against Intel's processors in the near future.

No idea but news have been floating around the net quite sometime ago that the Xbox deal is likely to be worth 3 billion to AMD..... If thats true, I would say thats quite alot of money to AMD. No news on PS4 deal though.

I don't think AMD earns much from the hardware itself but perhaps earning thru design and development of xobx. Perhaps even royalties? I don't know just making a guess.

I think most commercial software are compiled with intel compiler, thus this will give quite some impact to AMD processors especially 15h family series

It's not who saved them but their business strategies.
AMD CPU are weakest thus there's a shift in their business
away from CPU to APU/ARM based solutions.

Solution in the future AMD would be for embedded,
SOC and ARM based market.
Whether AMD will drop the CPU, it will be become
reality since recent years rumour is that FX series will
slowly be obsolete.

MS and Sony uses AMD APU SOC inside the consoles.

BF4 would like to have a word with you :o

It all comes down to proper programming and optimisation.

The only reason NVIDIA isn't any of the consoles is because they can't make enough margin from pursuing that business. This was publicly mentioned by their CEO.

So AMD picking this means they are just doing it to gain a foothold in the ecosystem and hopefully grow market share. Thus in terms of profit, they're likely not making much. It's a long-term strategy.

Your statement for AMD vs Intel is very bold. One good look that AMD is well optimized for BF4. It is not lagging. It is about what is their implementations and it is up to consumer to decide what they want.

And btw FX chips are here to stay. The only reason why AMD might be slower is because of their Single Thread performance is not as good as Intel chips due to the fact that AMD is used for parallel computing . But in terms of muti cores usage AMD is winning in this field very much this days about games optimizing more cores.

One good example like our dear forumer MacClipper have shown us the benchmarks for AMD FX8350 performing in BF4. Utilizing a total of 8 cores at 87% or higher when playing BF4.

Pay less and get more~!

Hmmm although amd seems more versatile I would still use intel for cpu simply because intel cpu is much more common.

even now Intel emphasis on GPU performance (see Iris...)
APU isn't just about GPU but is a direction that make GPU do more especially in parallel processing tasks.
APU SOC also consists of CPU in a package, if AMD were to drop CPU completely then what makes their CPU in APU?

no one knows exactly what happened. nVidia CEO can say what he wants...

The problem with Nividia dropping out is probably due to their hardcore outlook on their proprietary stuff.

AMD went the Open source route, what Open source means = less production cost. It helps everyone, small and big companies.
