Should have but those are pre-configured types.
For own use or for company use?

No one post is because by right you have go through proper channel
which is through IT integrator for advice first.
If they post, sure you have to pay for consultation fee cuz
it is not like going to PCshow and buy a laptop. :s22:

The vendor will ask you or even Slim lim shop will ask you:

- Purpose of server? NAS/VM/Exchange/Mail exchange and etc.
- Company size
- How many domain, is there a primary or secondary domain?

And etc.
Specs and pricing are vastly different depending on the scale
of your company and usage.
Small scale size SME a single server chip server with at least 32GB of ram
will do just fine running VM.

Sorry if you want further advice, call HP/Dell/Lenovo for further advice.
If I advice further you may have to pay me consultation fee. :s13:
Cuz have to understand your current infrastructure, usage and etc.

Not just walk into a shop and get either the cheapest or best
server it don't work that way.
FYI server no $800 one, using a desktop as a server is a bad idea.
A proper server may cost up to $10k including 24/7hr support.
Want cheap without 24/7 support and warranty is dangerous, anything means you have to troubleshoot it.

Server parts are not cheap either like SAS HDD cost few thousand dollar
than normal SATA HDD cost $90 or so.
Do tell your management level about the cost of server if it exceed their budget.

Make purchase decision not solely on cost itself but for the long run
of 5 years.

Hope this helps.

Why server parts so much more expensive?

Do they really deserve such a premium reliability wise?

Is failure rate in server much lower than using consumer grade parts? To the software running on them, they don't make a difference.

Server parts are not like premium brand like LV bags and etc.
LV are more expensive due to material and branding.
Server parts are more expensive as they are not intended
for general purpose but rather 24/7 data host.

Components, specs and etc. are intended to withstand 24/7.
Not to mention I/O, Data throughout are way a lot than
a standard computer.

However these days server have become cheap but again
depending on scale of coy and usage.
Failure rate wise, got no comments on this as it depends
how it is configured and maintain.

Typically a server can last up to 5-8 years before you need to change it.
That is why most server comes with maintenance contract to upkeep such a expensive asset.

You may ask why computer cannot last 5-8 years, than again
it's about the usage. Normal computer are made for general computing, gaming and etc.

Price is for normal consumers so of cuz it is way cheaper than a server.

server components is just a fancy word for pc parts that are targeted to companies willing to spend millions...:s13::s13::s13:

Precisely how often do consumer grade stuffs fail? Even if fail within 4 years, with the price difference can easily buy replacements.

But servers will go for expensive technologies like ECC RAM and SAS HDD which easily cost a lot more.

No doubt server grade stuffs area of better materials and more robustly tested to withstand more extreme workload, in reality is the huge price premium worth the small improvement in reliability or durability?

Even Backblaze are buying consumer grade SATA HDDs for their storage and not some fancy server grade SAS HDDs?

No idea where u get this concept of server from.

A server can mean anything in different context. In networking, a client-server model is built upon service providers ("servers") interacting with service requesters ("clients"). I can re-purpose an old computer lying around the house as a home file-server. Doesn't mean servers need to be expensive to be considered a server, so I don't see why costs need to come into the picture.

The reason why "server parts" are more expensive than "normal computer parts" has got to do more with scalability than reliability. Intel Xeon chip lineup provides scalability by offering end-consumers a range of products depending on usage, ranging from dual/quad cores to as many as 22 cores on a single CPU chip, with some motherboard systems accepting up to 10 CPU chips (Intel Xeon E7 series). With such huge amounts of processing power, of course Intel has to provide some sort of reliability assurance with ECC RAM and stuff like that, but that doesn't necessarily mean that non-ECC RAMs and non-Xeon chips will be unreliable as a result.

So plz don't confuse reliability with scalability. Just because it is labelled by the community as a "server part" does not automatically mean it is more reliable than a "non-server part". And hope u didn't mean "server part" as being a "server-grade part" coz that's a whole different meaning altogether.

its for company use. we need to run a webserver in cpu1 and another crunching app in cpu 2. its for testing purpose. so just needs about 24GB RAM. HD also no need to be RAID, just one HD.

Thanks for the info.

I just need something cheap and I heard from another guy XEON prev gen cpu price drop like crazy.

No need support/warranty.

My project last till next year only.

Should have but those are pre-configured types.

You are looking in the wrong direction, if you want to perform
two task you might as well look at VM environment.
1 server, 2 VM one for your webserver and the other for data crunching .

Want cheap, my advice get a Mid-range workstation like
Dell T5600 (2 CPU) to act as server.
Than again, depending on configuration the Dell T5600 may cost
around $5-$10k.

However it is way cheaper than server so maybe you want to consider
a workstation instead.

Bro u can always DIY your own server instead of buying from Dell/HP/Lenovo if u are on a tight budget.

u can buy SuperMicro C7H170-M or C7Z170-M mobos which can accept the latest Xeon processors but don't need u to use expensive ECC rams in order to boot becoz they are still using the consumer grade Z170 and H170 chipsets and they still support VT-d in their bios for direct passthrough too, Supermicro mobos are known for reliabilty n stability too.

U can buy 32gb(4x8gb) DDR4 rams kit from brands like Kingston, Cruical, Corsair, G. Skill.

U might want to buy a PCIE x8/x16 raid SAS/SATA controller card from LSI if u want to run raid on your HDDs..u might want to get hard disk drive caddy and cage if u want to hotswap your HDDs in the future...

Buy this Vertical Dual USB 3.0 A Type Female to Motherboard 20 Pin Box Header Slot Adapter PCBA from Amazon so that u can plug in a slim n small usb3 flash drive inside casing n your OS from it or u can leave your flash drive hanging outside too.

Don't use VMware if no money, use Promox VE or Unraid or Linux KVM if u want to use virtualization...

Lastly search for Linustechtips Gamer NAS in Youtube n learn from his build, get Nigel aka gs to help u assemble the rig if u don't know how every things go together in the rig...

If wanna be lazy, can just buy cloud computing like AWS, Google Cloud Computing or Microsoft Azure. No need to manage them yourself. After project ends, just tear down the server instances and don't renew subscription.

Seems like it is not some mission critical stuffs but it's a staging testbed of some kind.
