What abt servers for personal use? Am looking at building or buying a tower server for own use to play with VM and use got gns3 simulations etc. Any idea where yo get? Or still must contact dell etc?

If wanna be lazy, can just buy cloud computing like AWS, Google Cloud Computing or Microsoft Azure. No need to manage them yourself. After project ends, just tear down the server instances and don't renew subscription.

Seems like it is not some mission critical stuffs but it's a staging testbed of some kind.

Yes i believe another term is work station. Looking to build sth on my own if possible but not sure what specs are good. Dont things like ecc rams etc and its likely i wont be turning it on 247. Just that i need enough processing power to be able to run VMs and simulation tools(gns3). Of cos with enough slots if i need to install additional nic cards for a lab set up such as for CCIE or CCNP.

I'm in the same shoes as you looking to find a server for a small business with light workload.

The truth is that actually a properly made server from HP or Dell isn't going to more expensive that something you try to build yourself.
Example a full DL380 Gen9 with Xeon E5-2630v3 (8core/2.4Ghz) with base 8GB memory is less than $4k. Keep in mind this is a proper 2U server with cooling/raid controller and backplate for SAS/SATA SFF up to 16 drives. And has proper management ethernet (HP iLO) for offsite management at BIOS level with 4 network ports.

Its when you add in server grade storage and RAM which makes it expensive. Also keep in mind any failure to the server, they are able to come in next business day to give you a part placement or fix it on site.

I tried to DIY something similar and it works out to roughly the same or a bit cheaper. However trying to get parts is a pain and if something does go wrong with the server, is it worth your time and effort to maintain it? Its really up to each individual preference, especially when its company's work machine and not your personal pc.

As for using a normal PC for a server, I think its fine as long as you're not trying to do VMs. Actually I think that's the only reason why you would want server parts is because of the number of cores and memory. Try to run 10 VMs on your regular PC that will max out at 6-8cores at 64GB RAM compared to a server that will easily do 22-44 cores at 3TB of RAM is quite a world of difference. Price also big difference la but you get point.

On a flip side, if you're adventurous and don't mind failure, you can get the older e5-2670 which everyone is jumping on with a dual socket motherboard for roughly 1k. Not too bad for 16 cores.

1) a desktop workstation
2) a rack server or a blade server in a server room equipped with HVAC and UPS.

There is quite a bit of difference there...

You can buy server grade boards with 2 CPU sockets.

VMs love RAMs, so get more ram if you intend to run VMs. (ECC of course since it is server board)

Note : The free vmware supervisor only supports up to 32GB ram.
