Asus AS Sabertooth z97 mark II
i7-4790k
Vengeance pro 1866Mhz 16GB
Samsung Pro 128GB
Cm v850 80+ gold PSU
WE 2TB black
Corsair obsidian 760t

Does this build work well with gtx 980 sli? I'll be mainly using this for video editing and gaming with a Qnix 1440p Monitor. Are there better alternatives for the hardware? Will there be any bottlenecks with the hardware?

1) List down all games and video editors that you are using.

2) Are you overclocking?

3) Is it a must to have that Sabertooth? There are far cheaper alternatives avaliable that supports SLI.

4) It would be a better idea to use a WD Red and use the $$$ saved to upsize the SSD. You may also want to consider getting the Samsung Evo instead as it is much cheaper.

I will most likely be playing FPS and MMOs, although i don't have any preferences. I just require a system able to handle 1440p without any bottlenecks. This is my first build so i won't go crazy on the overclocking. Doesn't have to be Sabertooth of course, but i obviously won't buy one solely based on sli compatibility. Any recommendations?

Buy at PC Themes, #04-15, and ask for discounts. DIY yourself. If you can't into DIY, go to PC Care & Solution at #02-32 and ask Nigel to help you assemble for a fee.

Notes:

1) A Gigabyte Z87-D3H is suggested as it is relatively cheap, supports SLI and has 8+0 VRM phases for reliability during overclocking.

2) A GTX 970 is suggested as a GTX 970 can generally play most games at 1440p with an average of 50-60 FPS depending on game and is much cheaper than a GTX 980 (About $200+ difference.) If this is not enough, you can get another GTX 970 and go for a SLI configuration for better gaming performance at 1440p. Do remember to upsize your PSU to a 800+W PSU if going SLI.

3) A Corsair 400R is suggested as a much cheaper alternative to the 760T. However, casing opinions are subjective and you may wish to take a walk around SLS to check out the casings displayed there.

4) You can't go far on OC with stock cooling, hence a relatively cheap aftermarket cooler is included to start you out on OC.

5) ValueRAMs are suggested as they are in a standard height of 30mm and thus are compatible with all heatsinks. If you want to get better heatsinks or RAMs, please take note of heatsink RAM clearances and RAM heights as top end heatsinks have a RAM clearance of 30+mm and some RAMs have heatspreaders of a height of 40mm, leading to the RAM being unusable due to the heatsink blocking off the RAM slots.
