Since yesterday, I started to have this problem:

When I download with the normal proxy settings on my IDM, ie. leaving the proxy settings blank, my downloads start fast and then dropped to 0 speed after a while. This problem started only yesterday.

I then played with the proxy settings.

Using:
proxy.singnet.com port 8080
the speed is really fast, and I could download as usual without problem.

Using:
proxy.singnet.com.sg port 8080
the speed is really slow, but it doesn't drop to 0.

Can anyone enlighten me why the default proxy settings doesn't work anymore? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Thanks.

singnet proxy server is too overloaded, try to bypass it using google dns instead.

go to this screen

Click the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties

Change the option to use the following DNS server: 8.8.8.8 and use 8.8.4.4 as an alternate

I've switched the dns to google's, but the problem is still there. :)

Can't download a big file with the default proxy. The downloads usually stop halfway, speed drops to 0, and IDM says 'connection closed'.

Don't understand why...

What a joke! What has ST proxy server, and for this matter any ISP's proxy server, got to do with DNS? They are totally different thing and serve different purposes.

Switching to Google's DNS will not solve your problem. It is better to stick to ST's DNS servers. By default, this is already detected and in use in the router. If you decide to change it on your PC, then do it at your risk of not so efficient domain name resolution at your Singapore end going out and coming back in, therefore ST side of the Internet node.

Coming to the downloading problem, I think something is going on in ST. I do programming work involving file download from websites with their explicit permission. For the last 2 months, using SingTel Mobile can't even download a 200K file always incomplete. Then end of last week, same problem happen to ST Fibre without proxy server. When I use proxy server, the 200K file download complete.

Visual Studio 2013 Update 3 was released 5-Aug-2013. I tried downloading those 6 GB files from MSDN last week and always failed many times although eventually got them after many tries.

I think there may be some problem within ST at this point in time.

Few months ago, downloading from Yahoo even very small files was also problematic - failed to get response from Yahoo server - but problem went way after few weeks. This was Yahoo's server problem.

is it recommended to still use singnet proxy to speed up browsing or not?
also, the proxy with sg at the end and the other one without sg at the end, point to the same IP.
no difference whether you use with sg or without sg.
