Urgent question.. Do I need to apply for international driver licence to drive in Japan (Hokkaido)?

When I booked my car rental it says :

Drivers License :International License 1949
              Sxxxxxxxx
              Singapore

If I international driver licence is required, is the number same or different as my current SG licence number (IC number)?

Yes, u need to apply IDL to drive in Japan. At AA SG, get it on the spot, pay $20, CC accepted, no paywave.

IDL number is different to NRIC

There is nothing in my IDL to tie back to my NRIC, other than having photo.

My search in tocco for the price $35,300 includes English GPS. Does jalan.net's imclude English GPS? Can't seem to see that stated in the link you provided.

There is statement in the link “Option fee will be added at the shop on the same day”. Whatis option fee? Tocco also charges option fee of $1k.

JPY 32,961 on Jalan.net (this package comes with CDW Insurance)
https://www.jalan.net/rentacar/rese...c=1&s=1&rw=15&op=&rd=2017-12-18&td=2017-12-20

ToCoo, I got JPY 34,300 (excl 8% tax), and not yet include the mandatory ToCoo TAS charge of JPY 1,080 per day !

I do not see the ToCoo free wifi & free ETC card offer that was previously mentioned.

ToCoo's TAS charge is inclusive of CDW + NOC if I am not wrong. However, hirer needs to pay for any damages first, then claim against ToCoo's policy.

Whereas the CDW insurance from Jalan.net is from the car rental company itself. No need to pay first then seek reimbursement.

Current Jalan 5k off discount for 80k spend only. Can wait for others to appear.

Thank you!! Just made my IDL!! Almost forgotten about it

Anyway, just checking, anyone encountered any problem during the pickup of car in Japan, when you entered your SG Driving Licence number instead of IDL number?

Just to check if your booking is for any period that may require snow tire? If yes, do you have to pay extra for that?

What type of car are you renting? Yours works out to be avg $105 ~ $110 per day. I tried using tocco and was quoted 35,900 yen for 2 full days + 4 hrs.

paiseh i missed your question. i renting a normal Nissan Latio type, no snow tyres, 2 x child seats.

if not wrong, with the integrated car GPS, the language option can be set to English

in my previous Jalan rentals from Honda & Mazda, i did not specify Eng GPS. The GPS device menu is in Japanese (cant change) but the Navi instructions were read out in Eng (eg in 200m turn left, shortly after turn left).

I read Chinese so not an issue with basic use of the Jap menu.

You can always email Nissan car rental, ask if u rent a car via Jalan.net from X location, do they provide Eng GPS.

Edit: ToCoo's 35,300 is before tax. There will be additional JPY 1,080 charge per day for TAS, not sure if they charge per 24 hours or part thereof. Somehow ToCoo's booking site dont seem to add these items up to show the grand total. Just be aware.

Thanks so much for your prompt response. Last question, do you know what is the option fee that jalan.net charges on the day of car collection? Are they referring to options like child seat, English GPS, etc? And any idea if there is additional charges for snow tires request?

Sorry for the many questions.

Sorry for the many questions.

I figured you have sorted out Jalan registration ?

The options on Jalan are for Child Seat, Junior Seat or Baby Seat and whether you want to enrol in Nissan's Comprehensive Insurance cover. There is NO option to select English GPS or Snow Tires.

However, this could just be the limitation of the Jalan booking system as a broker.

In my previous bookings (in Hokkaido only), the actual car rental companies (ie Honda, Times Car, e-Rental Car) provide other options upon pick-up. I have managed to rent ETC card when non was offered on Jalan and even change different return location that was not offered on Jalan at no extra charge.

These are of course subject to availability. You can try to email the car company to request after booking. Besides, Jalan booking can be cancelled without penalty (up to within 1 week of pickup) & you dont need to provide Credit Card details.

Your Serena is from Nissan, a big company so I think they will try their best to help.

GPS - I think what u wld likely get is a Multi-lingual GPS if book on Jalan, which is simple enuf to use. Besides, u wld have wifi and Google Map as backup. For 3 days is fine. A car pre-fitted with pure English GPS will probably need to be pre-arranged or they can provide a standalone English GPS.

Snow tires - for rentals in Hokkaido, snow tires are automatically offered FOC as a Winter package from early Nov. You shld email Nissan to ask for Kanagawa and I think these likely need to be pre-arranged as well.

Dont worry too much. The service from rental car companies have been very good, even for non-japanese speaking customers.

Yes, finally sorted out how to register yesterday night. Had problem with the Katakana name. Used google translator to translate English name to Katakana, then cut and paste.

I noted that the rental cost difference for 2 full day 4 hrs vs 3 full days is only about SGD 50. As I will be in Hakone on 17th for a night and then plan to pick up the car on 18th for my onward trip to Fuji area. Do you think it is better to rent the car on 17th instead? That is pick up at 17th 4pm and return on 20th 4pm. I am not familiar with Hakone area. If I have the car a day earlier, is there anywhere to drive around in the evening?

Oh I see... haha sure. Are you renting a car in Hakone and Fuji area?

Thanks again, Oceanicmanta. You have helped boost my confidence in renting the car with jalan.net.

yes, will rent a car, but have not researched where to go etc just came back from 15 days in Hokkaido

after booking Jalan, do keep lookout for their discount coupon. If available, save the coupon, do another booking, apply the discount, then cancel the earlier booking.

I once booked using 2k discount. 1 month later, a 7k discount became available & I rebooked ! Happy.

Jalan is BIG in Japan so no worries dealing with them. The other is Rakuten Travel JP also have good deals.

I have no trouble with jalan.net too. Though Orix, the car rental company, i have a minor complaint. The staff told us that only registered IDP driver then can drive their car. As one of our driver is still in transit and not able to produce his passport at the counter. So we just registered 2 with passports and IDP.

But the 3rd driver was really itching to drive, so when we were at Asahikawa's Orix, we asked another staff that speak surprisingly good English and that lady said so long as the registered driver is on board, any driver that has a IDP can drive. So there's the miscom. Luckily we asked, otherwise, the 2 drivers will really shagged out by the long driving.

Is the Thai Airways check in counter in CTS particular about baggage weight? I don't have any status with the airline.
