Anyone self-drived in Japan before? Going to Kyushu next week and planning to self-drive, does anyone know if they strictly require International Driving License or can we just use our SG license for car rental.

IDP is strongly recommended. Many Japs car rental companies will refuse to rent u a car if u don't have it. And u will have problems with their police should u get pulled over and u don't have the IDP with you.

Cant rent without IDP. Cant drive w/o IDP. SG license not valid at all.

IDP holds the translation of your permit to drive there. Not that difficult to apply, it's now open on weekends, just bring 2 passport photos, 20 bucks and state license.

I have driven a few times in japan... feels quite safe to me.
the drivers there are much more patient than those in sg. they can slowly follow behind a bus going at 30kmh and dun bother to overtake!

Just to update since people are asking.

AA has a branch at AMK - Above S11 and Macs, below raiders cyber cafe. I did my there, it's instant (10mins), and don't even need a passport photo, they take on the spot.

My last few applications was at river valley where it open weekdays only lol.
I think now improved application with more branches. Last few travels never drive no bother to apply, prefer to have good sleep on train
