Dry Cabinet Issues

Just got myself a DSLR and now it worries me .
I haven't get myself a Dry Cab /Dry Box

Can I just leave it lying around open ? By doing that will it prompt on getting a fungus.

Lens will begin to grow fungus within weeks (5 days in one instance!) of exposure to damp, dark, warm conditions. So avoid such conditions whenever possible.

The good news is that drying a lens out thoroughly, and keeping it dry will effectively stop the fungal growth in the majority of cases, and will prevent any spores from germinating.

Seriously I'm a beginner in this photography as I just started photography recently .

I just bought myself a D5000 and I don't know what safety precaution to be taken if I don't took care of it that well . I don't want to spend excessive amount to repair and such . I rather ask then be sorry .

So now I don't own a Dry Box/Dry Cab for the meantime . What are the main safety precautions in order to prevent fungal growth ? Currently my camera I let it open lying on the bed while the lense cap is stilll cover on .

Secondly .

Cleaning Kit ?

Everytime I bring out my DSLR when I got home . Is it a must to clean the lense before keeping it ? Must I blow out the dust in the inside ?

Explain me more on cleaning kit how it works and such. ?

i'm quite noob too but i read on cleaning before. I dont think you needa go to the extend of blowing the dust in the sensor area. Instead more dust will be coming in?

Don't put on bed, later you sit on it or it falls how?. Ho seh le. =X

With that being said, why isn't there a dry cabinet in your home yet...? Just go out and grab one, or ask for delivery if it's a 80L and above.

Leaving it outside for a few days may not result in any fungus growth. Imagine yourself bringing a DSLR on travel, you can't be bringing a dry box or dry cabinet with you, right? However, it still depends very much on the humidity level.

It depends on your habit, though maintaining the DSLR everytime after use is good. Personally, I don't have a full cleaning kit, just a blower and microfibre cloth, that's all.

If u always use your dslr then ,its ok ...there will be a stage when u need to store it for long time. Then start saving to buy a dry cabinet.

All u need is a rocket blower and a lens pen. Just blow the lens off from dust b4 storing. Or use the lens pen to clean finger print etc.

The mirror or sensor no need to clean ,unless u spot dust in your pictures

No, not recommended...

You can't control the humidity with Thirsty Hippo. Note that it's not good either if it's too dry.

Please just go get a proper Dry Cabinet. If you're not sure where to start with, go here. Power consumption isn't that high anyway, and you'll definitely be more than happy with it, than going with a dry box.

explain me more about re-charging the silica gel by microwaving it and such ?
thats means I don't need to change a silica gel anymore ? get one and once its already old then I charge it by microwave it ?

I heard it that by microwaving it , it will cause hazards to us or something because microwave is only meant for food and such not for those types .






What are the safety precautions to be taken for now ? I don't have any Dry Box/Cab yet .
And currently I leave it open and I didn't store it at the bag itself .

I heard if you left it open just like that . Fungal won't grow that much .

But on the other side , few others said its not recommend .

And some others said if you shoot every now and then , then u don't need to care about fungal growth and such . Whereas others said its bull**** .

the best way to prevent fungus growth is to use the equipment often. so even for a month or two without dry cabinet should be fine.
