Hi all

Would you storing your data to DVD or HDD ?

I prefer DVD because HDD could failed any time.

HDD was made for storing temporry data that the reason we able to delete or format it.

For storing permantly data DVD was the best choice.

The recording media material will fade over time, depending on the storage condition. Don't be surprised if you are unable to read back discs burnt a few years back.

As for HDD, you can migrate to new HDD after a few years. Some more, per gigabyte of storage for HDD is the lowest when compared to other media.

No data media is safe by itself. We should make backup copies of important data that we do not want to lose.

Agreed, even DVD is not 100% safe. My wedding videos n photos fr the photographer were unable to read, even the back discs I burnt also can't read just after 3 to 4yr.

Luckily I managed to extract them using some software. Now I backup in Nas n another hdd.

No really, a backup system should comprise of at least two different mediums to allow easier retrieval of your data (e.g. in situations where you can access only DVDs or HDDs)

Also, why not BDs?

These two assumptions sound a tad dangerous, like there's too much trust in one medium. Since you sound so confident about DVDs, maybe you can share how you store yours. Climate (humidity/temp) controlled environment?

Whatever backup/storage format you favour, the golden rule is this:

Follow the best practices for data curation: Store multiple copies in multiple locations, regularly check the health of your data, and keep your hardware, software, and file formats up to date.

People usually only use DVD to store their vintage album and video memory collection...

DVD have failed me many times without warning.... , hdd least there are signs when it is about to fail, I could then backup the data to a new hdd/cloud.

For a good backup, better to store you data in two different hdds. As long as you've got two location to store your data, it should be safe.

I've used this concept for the last twenty years, as it has never failed.

Cloud is good, but if your password gets hacked, or the company holding your data goes bust, your data is gone. Also, confidentiality is not. Certain if stored by third parties.

This is human error.
But usually can still recover via recycle bin.

Raid1 kenna virus encryption, both disk encrypted

Moi running Ubuntu.
Tio virus encrytion?
tan gu gu ah.
even if tio i also got addition backup on external usb 3 hdd.

Raid1 some Nas has hardware encryption. Nas faulty, data gone.

Moi don't NAS.
KNS NAS got high failure rate.

1x 1TB HDD = 200+ DVDs
Can call police to RAID TS House for DVDs boh?
I can say TS selling child porn DVDs make the police go raid his house for his hundreds of DVDs.

You can try the blu ray or dvd mdisc instead. I bought an external blu ray drive and mdisc just for this purpose. Mdisc not cheap but meant to last

DVD stores GBs data, HDD stores TBs data. the portable HDD is more convenient for users nowadays, it can plug and play on all kinds of devices and anywhere.

I never used Cloud before. online data storage is reliable and safe ?
