EDMW 30days old thread can't be bump.

Seriously vijay, I believe it isn't you who set the restriction, but don't you feel this restriction is kinda moot?

If the restriction is only for users below certain postcow, then I am appalled that having more then 1k postcow still isn't enough to post in 30days thread.

If the restriction is a global restriction for members, then you might as well set your edmw thread prune time to 30days rather then keeping it at 15months because it is as good as being the same.

Plus how is it going to stop spammer with this restriction If I am the culprit, I will just bump 30days old thread rather then bump 3months old thread. Is your other admin going to then change the posting rule to 1day old thread?

We believe you have misunderstood this function. Discussion threads that are 30 days old can still receive posts. It is discussion threads that have not had any activity (i.e. new posts) for 30 days that will be categorised as inactive and ready for pruning.

This is to maintain a healthy balance on our server load for the convenience of all users.

You are right. My bad for expressing inactivity of thread as age of thread.

Nonetheless, it is still true that if 30days of inactivity means ready for pruning, then it is extremely silly that the pruning period is set at 15months. So a 30days inactive thread will become ready for pruning AND sit for another 14 more months before being prune.

If that is really the decision, I got nothing else to say. Just disappointed that decision was reached for allowing such a short period before killing any thread. Is the management trying to encourage more posting(aka bumping) of threads that we are interested to keep alive?

I concur with OP. It is plain silly to gazet the discussion thread for pruning just 30 days in. Some are repositories of information that members contribute from time to time, albeit infrequently. It is extremely frustrating when one bookmarks a thread and when revisits it and posts something, only to receive a warning/refraction.

It's akin to penalising a forum user for contributing more volume to the core biz of HWZ forums. Notwithstanding server load and bandwidth issues, perhaps HWZ Admin may wish to review the 30 days thread consideration.

Glad to know you're interested in contributing more to the forums.

But here's the thing - as EDMW is a chit-chat forum, it has a massive amount of non important discussions that are of no relevance past the time it first began; more so, some are really a discussion between a few people. Keeping that huge volume of content is more detrimental in the long run as it really bloats the DB heavily. That will only affect your user experience in the forums. Hence the harsh pruning limits set on EDMW.

If the topics are important, they should be discussed in the respective forums - we pretty much have a relevant forum for every major discussion topic. These other forums do not have such strict pruning policies.

Either that, or we will think of stepping up moderation to move well discussed discussions to their respective forums.

Meanwhile, members and thread starters can send a PM to respective moderators to also consider moving relevant and useful threads out of the EDMW to the respective forum.

For example, there are many interesting debates of the local scene or what the government is doing right or wrong. Many of these discussions are appropriate for the Current Affairs forum - not EDMW.

Long story short - if all the members use the appropriate forums, there wouldn't be a concern.

Understand the tradeoff and tensions you cited; many of these threads are in EDMW precisely because of the high human traffic. Much as I feel that it's a pity a wealth of information is lost through the regular pruning, I respect the admin's stance and the points you've made.

Perhaps one consideration is for the moderators/admin to exercise their discretion and dish out warnings/infractions on a case by case basis. There may still be merit in bumping up a >30 days old thread on a needs basis.

If any, this sub-forum can be the platform to adjudicate on such matters.
