After selling off a large chunk of its Canadian assets nearly a decade ago, U.K.-based energy giant Shell is now expanding its operations in Alberta and British Columbia by acquiring Calgary-based ARC Resources for $22 billion.
It is the latest in a series of deals in the Canadian oilpatch in recent months, and more are expected as companies search the globe for secure, low-cost and long-term sources of oil and natural gas, especially after the disruptions caused by the U.S. war with Iran.
This investment by Shell could also signal the European firm is preparing to spend billions more in Canada by moving ahead with an expansion that would increase natural gas exports off the West Coast.
Monday's deal for ARC is Shell's largest acquisition in the last decade. ARC is primarily a natural gas producer with average production of approximately 410,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
"We're having more supermajors start to look at Canada as a viable place to invest," said BMO Capital Markets analyst Jeremy McCrea about the significance of the deal.
"This is probably the start of more things to come," he said.

This type of food is only popular in Malaysia/Singapore. In other countries is not a viable business at all.

A Malaysian restaurant is closing its doors in Calgary after being open for just a little over a year.
Makan Malaysian Cuisine, located in Kensington, announced on Instagram that it will be closing, with its final day open on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, just over a year after opening.
“After much consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision to permanently close our Kensington location,” the post read.

Are you eligible to vote in the Referendum?
I think it is very impractical for Alberta to succeed from Canada.
Quebec wanted to as well but they understood what they will be losing and Alberta has even more to lose.
yes I will be voting.
It was very impractical for Singapore to be kicked out from Malayan Federation. Look where SG is now.
Unlike Quebec, Alberta is a serious oil producer.
Is Alberta joining the US as the 51st state? I am sure Trump would be interested with all the natural resources in Alberta. Trump probably won’t be interested in Qubec which is a drag for federal government all these years.
Will take a while.
First AB has to vote that it wishes to separate from Canada. We have a vote this Oct to vote whether we want to have that vote that says we separate or not. Also need to see if the courts will allow.
USA has been working behind the scenes supporting the separatist movement. David Parker the leader of the separatists has fled to Texas.
Not sure about what Albertans think of joining the USA though. We are not quite there yet.

A new report ranked Calgary as the second-most affordable major housing market in Canada, though it still landed in the “seriously unaffordable” category.
The 2026 Demographia International Housing Affordability report, published by the Frontier Centre for Public Policy, examined 96 major housing markets across eight countries using the median multiple measure, which compares median house prices with median household incomes.
The report classifies housing markets with a median multiple of three or less as affordable, 3.1 to four as moderately unaffordable, 4.1 to five as seriously unaffordable, 5.1 to 8.9 as severely unaffordable, and nine or higher as impossibly unaffordable.
Calgary was the 25th most affordable market in the report with a score of 4.3, landing in the seriously unaffordable category; however, it was the second most affordable market in Canada.
Edmonton was ranked as Canada’s most affordable housing market, earning a score of 3.6 and landing in the moderately unaffordable category.
Nationally, Canada’s median multiple reached 5.4, placing the country in the “severely unaffordable” category. By comparison, the United Kingdom posted a 5.2 score, while the U.S. recorded a median multiple of 4.5.
Canada’s housing affordability challenges were most pronounced in Vancouver and Toronto. Vancouver ranked among the world’s least affordable major housing markets, with a median multiple of 10.8, behind only Hong Kong, Sydney, San Jose and Adelaide. Toronto also remained in the “severely unaffordable” category, posting a median multiple of 7.6.
“Many Canadians assume housing affordability challenges are simply the result of growing cities and strong demand, but the international data tell a different story,” said Wendell Cox, principal author of the report. “The evidence shows that housing affordability is strongly influenced by policy choices that affect land supply and housing development.”
Cleveland was the most affordable major housing market in the study, posting a median multiple of 3.1, while Pittsburgh followed at 3.2.
The report argues that jurisdictions with responsive land markets and fewer development constraints tend to have more affordable housing. It points to development restrictions such as urban growth boundaries, greenbelts and other policies as factors associated with higher housing costs in many markets.
“The experience of many jurisdictions shows affordability can improve when governments remove barriers to housing supply and allow development to respond to demand,” the report said.
Despite those findings, no major housing market surveyed met Demographia’s affordability benchmark, defined as housing costing three times annual household income or less.

“Moving fast in the slow lane: Alberta’s economy in 2026 and 2027” is the latest quarterly economic report from ATB Financial.
According to ATB, Alberta is forecast to lead the country this year in employment and economic growth. Real GDP growth is projected to be 2.6 per cent in 2026 and 2.4 per cent the following year. The Canadian economy is forecast to grow by 0.8 per cent in 2026 and 1.9 per cent in 2027.
Alberta employment growth is forecast at 3.3 per cent in 2026 and 1.6 per cent in 2027.
Alberta’s economic fortunes have long fallen and risen with the global price of oil. The province relies heavily on the resource sector for government revenue because it does not have a provincial sales tax.
Not everything is rosy. Albertans are still struggling with food and energy costs, and youth unemployment is still high, the report notes.
It also points to current investment uncertainty due to this fall’s referendum on Alberta’s future in Canada.
The oil and gas industry is also in wait-and-see mode as it is watching for Alberta to submit a proposal for a new West Coast oil pipeline to Canada’s Major Projects Office by July 1.
ATB chief economist Mark Parsons said while there is additional economic risk from tariffs and the negotiations to renew the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) this summer, approval of a pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific could be a huge boon for the Alberta economy.
