end-2011 MacBook Pro Bty can't charge

Bought this Macbook Pro early last year for my college daughter (macbook no longer under warranty).
The battery won't charge when powered on and hence it cant start without external power.
At times even with external power connected it can't start.
Had allowed a SLS repair shop diagnose for a couple of days and was told it is a motherboard problem (man was kind enough not to charge me anything)

this is a fairly new macbook. I can still use it but only with external power connected. I suspect battery is faulty but it would be costly for me to buy one and test.
What can I do?

i'm assuming 13" mbp. a new battery costs $65. is that considered too costly?

65 bucks for 3rd-party or original? and I am not sure whether the bty is faulty at the moment, maybe I bring to another repair shop for a second opinion.

The Mac itself can provide some diagnostics. Does it say the battery is bad? Run "System Information" and check under the Power page.

Under the power page, Battery information,
Charge Remaining (mAh) is 0, Fully Charged - No, Charging - No, & Full Charge Capacity (mAh) is 0.

I also realized under Battery Installed: No

try running Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test.

see if detect problem with your logic board.

and to your earlier question, $65 is for the original apple battery part.

if you just want to try to see if it is battery problem only, pm me, i might have a solution for you.

Thanks for your recommendations.

Dropped by a shop@Funan yesterday, who does Macbook repairs among other things.
Replaced the battery with another one and discovered the macbook can't boot up either. So more or less the battery isn't the problem.
Guy says motherboard. (which was what the repair guy in SLS said as well in my first endeavor to fix it a week back)

So he has taken my mbp and trying to repair it. Max damage according to him is 220 but if can't fix, according to him will not take any $$, or if can fix but may go beyond 220, he will call me and ask whether I want to proceed.

Let's see how it goes.
