Entry level DSLR or mirrorless/compact?

Hi all,

I've been reading up a lot on cameras recently, but I still do not know which I should get.
Basically I need a camera with these conditions:
1) Able to have clear videos and pictures in low light settings.
2) Able to be auto focus as much as possible.
3) Weight and bulky-ness.
4) Price approx. $1k or less.

It would be really helpful if someone can help me out! TIA

Your point #3 helped you to decide already.
While there are mirrorless cameras bodies which are as heavy and bulky as DSLR, there are no DSLR as light and compact as the mirrorless cameras.

canon 100D is very compact if you want a dslr.

but you can always go for a small point and shoot camera like canon S-series(s90/95/100/120) since you didnt mention you want interchangeable lens.

get sony A6000 if you like a good grip, fast autofocus, decent video, rather light weight and small size compared to DSLRs

Panasonic LX-100 ( fixed lens )
- big enough M43 sensor
- 24-75mm equiv. F1.7-2.8 lens
- compact

While there are better and in some cases, cheaper interchangeable lens cameras, you often have to invest in better lens to get the " low light shots " you are looking for.

Having the same situation as you.

2 potential candidates I'm currently looking at are ....

Olympus EM10 with it pencake kit len
Sony A600 with it slightly bigger kit len.

Overall size, Olympus is definitely smaller + also cheaper (~S$800 +/-)
But Sony is spec better incl. more Xpensive (~S$1K =/- a little bit)

Most likely for myself will go for the Olympus simply because of compactness with it's super compact kit len unless in the coming week able to get Sony in the same pricing range.

1. Olympus has a smaller sensor but more lens to choose. Some ppl feels smaller sensor not shiok....

2. Sony has bigger APCS sensor. Perceive to have better image quality, faster auto focus etc...but lens selection not as good as olympus.

My actual consideration is $$$ and overall compactness.
Not so much into lens selection available.

The idea is that this new camera must make me want to bring it out frequently and not only for purposely plan photo-taking outing.

Anyway, just pull the trigger for a EM10 with it's pencake kit len and will be collecting it today. Hopefully, I'll be bring this cam out on regular basis just like what I do with a mobile phone.
