Hey anyone keen to go ? I'd be trying to get a ride on this shinkansen in November.

coz I usually just focus on an area for a trip, so usually will not need to travel long distance on shinkansen.


JR Kansai area pass doesn't cover shinkansen. need to get JR Kansai wide area pass or JR Kansai Hiroshima area pass

Hyperdia has no schedule for the train yet.

Maybe will see it when the autumn train schedules are loaded

It is a kodama train. If I am full fare for my shinkansen, I might consider. Anyway this train runs for 2 years (but probably only on certain days) so there is no rush.

He's right, it's till March 2017 (H29).

To TS, personally I'm booked to be in Fukuoka from 1-4 Nov, travel schedule already decided upon, maybe I'll try catching the Hakata-Minami run as they send the train back to depot for stabling assuming it is a scheduled Kodama run.

Haha not so much Tetsuo as trying to satisfy my S.O. that "We have to make time to go see this train", "It won't take more than an hour" and "It won't cost a bomb".

So I did some research. The train is already loaded up on the JR-west timetable, just not sure if it is replacing a current scheduled 500 series or it's a special schedule altogether.

Iirc the series 500 has been withdrawn from kodoma service entirely. Wiki isn't updated but read somewhere on jprail that they have been phased out for the n700 series that are themselves being phased out for n700a trainsets.

So this is a special special service. My dream to ride on the German designed s500

Used to be the fastest train in japan. Until the e5 came along for hayabusa service.

Try this press release webpage? I won't be too concerned over the timetable schedules for the Eva 500 series Shinkansen because it is clearly stated that the operating service will start in 2015 Autumn period and there are only 2 trains service slots for this special Evangelion run (via Kodama 730 and 741 services) and typically since Autumn season starts in Japan from mid-Oct onwards, you are pretty much safe and should definitely be able to ride on this since you have mentioned you are heading there during upcoming Nov.

It's worth noting that based on the advertisement off JR West Japan's website and wikipedia info the 500 Series Shinkansen is strictly an all-stations Kodama train service and will also only exclusively be on the Sanyo Shinkansen lines (covered stations/route map can be viewed here for those unfamiliar with Sanyo Shinkansen service)

IMO, not exactly very wise idea to cover yr tracks all the way from Shin-Osaka to Hakata if you are planning a trip to Kyushu since that's a close to 5-hours ride, but if you are just thinking of dropping by certain places to check out locations like Himeiji, Okayama etc while departing from Shin-Osaka while on a JR pass, checking this train service out may not be such a bad idea afterall. (I will be there in late-October for some events and will also stay in Osaka so quite likely chance for me to ride on this special train service i guess)
